Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Fate.
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started making music back in 2012 with a group called Square crew. My first song was called “Milkduds & Asscheeks” and I submitted to a contest for A105 radio. My crew won the contest and were invited to perform and be interviewed in Georgia. While waiting to interview I was chosen to be the manager of the group. I worked with the group and managed for a while until I decided to go solo. I was solo for a couple years until I started working with Wave Culture Media. We started throwing events together and branding with an international clothing company that lead to my first show at St Andrew’s with Raw Artists. After a couple years with them I met TopShelfOrDie and signed under Justin as an artist and model. I started modeling and did my first show almost immediately and even started performing at fashion shows. My dad’s health took a turn for the worse in 2018 and I lost him before the end of the year. I took time off from music for mental health to mourn my father and really think about what my life meant, who I wanted to be, and how being so close to my father changed my perception of the world. After some months of healing isolation and reflection, I decided to write an album about that I named “Bloom” to represent my emergence into the world from a dark place and opening myself to the world again. I started attending saposesh in flint and moving into the cannabis community as an artist. While growing in that community, I was also doing shows in the city from time to time. I recorded and mixed the first song from “Bloom” called “Natural” at a show that DjBj was hosting. After performing, he asked me to meet his head engineer at his studio. I went to 3525 studios and met Ben, the head engineer, to show him some songs I was working on and tell him about the album I wanted to make for my father. To my surprise, they decided to fund “Bloom” and partnered me up with P-Will to create the project. We spent months doing 2 am-10 am sessions producing, writing, and recording “Bloom”. Towards the end of the projects creation, I got booked for a show in North Carolina, Illinois, and Colorado. I strung my shows together with 2 more Detroit shows and 1 in Flint. After finishing the tour, I did an album release party which was immediately followed by Co-vid. With concerts and events coming to a standstill, I decided to pivot into the cannabis industry. I started assisting Justin under Mary Documentary and met companies from Colorado, California, and even seeing growing operations for major companies. While creating content for Mary Doc, we started handing consultations for businesses when my friend Christian Perine reached out to me about a potential business plan she called “Blew Amsterdam”. I told Justin about it and we decided to focus all effort on helping her create her business. We got her a designated consumption license in April 2021 and have been looking for a building since. While looking for a building a business associate of ours reached out to me about his imported snacks business he called zazaworldd. I became the head of promotion and helped with inventory, building the brand in Detroit. After helping so many companies I decided that I wanted to go back to “Bloom” to finish the project to completion. I started a partnership with SnowGang Studios and got the stems from 3525 Studios to mix and master the project. I released “Bloom:Blossom Edition Pt.1” in January 2022 with half the songs I’ve finished and am planning on dropping pt.2 before the end of the year.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been taken advantage of so many times. Whether it’s clothing companies that want free promotion, cannabis companies that want free labor, or friends who take more than they give. I’ve had to make new boundaries more than I thought.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started as an artist, dove into modeling, learned how to consult, started hosting events, and more. I’m just living life and trying things out.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see Detroit becoming so much more recognized. From our amazing art scene to our wildly successful cannabis market, we’re taking charge in a lot of areas people never gave us credit for.
