Life & Work with Mary-Catheryn of Copper Corners Art

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary-Catheryn.

Hi Mary-Catheryn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I get asked a lot about how I started painting. Well, our family had just moved to a new home and we had big empty walls. For a long time, I searched and searched for something, ANYTHING, to fill them but nothing caught my eye nor my heart. Eventually, I took matters into my own hands and went to the store to buy some paint and a canvas. This is how my cow was born. I created what I had been searching for. I would love to say that for years I studied and learned art at a prestigious and exclusive art school, but my reality is that I come from a long line of humble artists and it simply runs in my blood.

My art is greatly inspired by my upbringing in South America, where I was raised with a deep connection to nature, especially the animals. I paint the cows that roamed our sidewalks, blocking our car in the garage and making me late to school. I paint the moody pigs that napped under our neighbor’s mango trees. I paint the chickens that slept at night, snuggled in the trees. Each painting that I create is vibrant, colorful, textured, and intricately layered. Countless hours are dedicated to crafting each piece of art. I strive to portray a balance of realism combined with loose abstraction, causing one to compliment the other. My goal is for people to feel a connection with my paintings in a meaningful and unique way.

My paintings have now been turned into wallpaper! I manufacture it in Grand Rapids, MI and ship it all over the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without my wonderful husband and my team. My husband (of 17 years) is my biggest cheerleader and is always there clapping for me. My work team is a gift from god. They start as my employees and turn into my best friends. It may look like it is just me, but I have encouragers all around me who make everything possible and I am so grateful for them.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
It always feels good to purchase something beautiful for yourself, but it feels EXTRA good to purchase something beautiful that was made in the USA by hard-working women. We are really proud of our wallpapers and have put years into making them perfect.

Since I design them from my paintings, they have a beautiful textured look and depth, as if your wall was hand-painted by me.

I appreciate so many different design styles and that really shows in my wall coverings. There is a range of modern, to romantic, to classic and even little insects (a fan favorite amongst little boys) :).

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I work really hard and am so thankful for every client who purchases from me. I know that in this world we have unlimited choices, so when someone purchases from me, I am truly grateful and I show that by giving them the best product possible. Also, I always handwrite cards with orders. I have done it since day one and I continue to do it. It definitely takes time, but that is my way of showing how much I appreciate my clients.
