Today we’d like to introduce you to Khella Young.
Khella, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Bee Buzzed began at a time when I was in between jobs in 2017. I was trying to think of an idea that could become a full-time job for me if I dedicated enough time to it. My mom used to bake cakes for my brother and I when we were younger, she would even decorate them herself. I used to love to come in and “help,” mainly by licking the spoon once she was done with the batter and frosting. Though I did not do much, I was intrigued at how she made everything. The thought came to me to take something I knew she was good at and combine it with something I knew I could be good at — decorating, because of my artistic background. However, I wanted to distinguish myself from other bakers in the area and I gave my business a twist. Thus, Bee Buzzed was born, making boozy adult cakes and desserts for celebrations. After a year in business, my mom and I realized that our customer base was not only adults who enjoyed a drink here and there, but also virgin cakes for children and adults who did not drink as well. We have made hundreds of cakes and various desserts since we began, and can’t wait to continue being a part of celebrations in our community!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, we have had a smooth road. Although we have experienced small struggles, we have been able to overcome all of the things the business has thrown at us thus far.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Bee Buzzed is a Specialty Dessert business based in Hamtramck, MI. It is a black-owned, women-owned, mother-daughter duo. The name Bee Buzzed evolved from our ability to mix alcohol and cake together in a taste-enhancing way. While we specialize in liquor-infused desserts, we also have virgin options to cater to the under 21 crowd and those who do not consume alcohol. Bee Buzzed gained its initial popularity in 2018 as a vendor in the Trap Art art show held at the El Club in Southwest Detroit. Since then, we are widely recognized for our memorable cake slices sold at numerous pop-up events and our annual Free Slice Day held every first weekend in July.
In addition to selling generously sized slices, we pride ourselves on creating beautiful works of art that almost looks too good to eat.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Our next goal is to begin offering nationwide shipping of our desserts. To keep up with our progress or to place an order, you can contact us via our website at www.bee-buzzed.com or follow us on Facebook and Instagram at Bee Buzzed (@beebuzzed).
