Inspiring Conversations with Kai Leigh of Touch of Kai

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kai Leigh.

Kai, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I look back, as long as I can remember I have always made things with my hands. I have taught myself to upholstery, crochet, make sugar scrub, body butter, draw, make waist-beads and now wax melts. I put a lot of love into my products and it brings me happiness to know that people enjoy my creations. I opened up my shop with waist beads in 2020, but after a near-death experience in 2021, I decided to go in a new direction. I suffered a lot of emotional trauma. I had constant anxiety and fear after that experience. I remember crying to God one day. I said God, what makes me so special? Why would you spare my life of all people? I went on to tell him that whatever He wanted me to do, I would do it. Then I listened. And shortly after I started making wax melts. Aromatherapy brought me so much calmness and peace after such a traumatic experience. Wax melts was one of the major ways I dealt with my anxiety. Crafting and burning them saved my mental health. We were still going through the pandemic and I knew people were suffering. I wanted to share what helped me deal with my trauma. So my contribution to the world was aromatherapy via wax melts.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening up a business can be very tedious because of all the documents needed and all of the red tape. But I’m very lucky to have had people in my life to mentor me. I have a cousin, Tiera, and a very close friend, Nicole, who took me under their wing and helped me with all of the administrative stuff. They had so much experience and was able to guide me in the right direction. They answered all of my questions no matter how much I annoyed them lol. They definitely went the extra mile for me. I also had a brief mentor, Bruce, who gave me great insight. He helped me to develop my product further so that it could be at its best. I also found a lot of support in the wax melt and candle community. They continue to be such an amazing help. They are a very positive group and am extremely knowledgeable. It also helped that I caught on fairly quickly. That’s when I knew this was my right path.

We have been impressed with Touch of Kai, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I create 90% of the items on my website. I am known for making waist beads and wax melts. What sets me apart from others are the details I put into my products and the time I take to research. I have very loyal customers and it is because they know that a product from me will be one of quality. Their support is real, and I am truly grateful for that. I am most proud of teaching myself how to make wax melts lol. I didn’t know anyone who had made any so I mostly had to learn through lots of research. It takes math and science to create wax melts and I’m not too proud to say I’m good at either subject lol. But I am very proud of myself for learning something different.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to me is to help others by doing what I love. I want to help people balance their lives. Or at the very least help them escape to a peaceful place, if only just for a moment. That’s why I like to name my wax melts instead of putting the scent on my label. I mean how fun is it to say I’m going to burn Aloha vibes and then imagine you’re in Hawaii? And how many times after a hard day have you ran a bath, poured a glass of wine, lit a candle, and relaxed? Well burning a wax melt is the same thing as lighting a candle. It’s just done without using a flame. I can’t give you therapy but I can give you aromatherapy, lol.
