Today we’d like to introduce you to Halimah Consuelo.
Hi Halimah, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised in Detroit, my family’s been entrenched in the arts since before I was born- they helped techno bloom into the city and are deep in the jazz scene so it was natural for me to flow into a creative path. I began performing at age 6 and decided later that creating is how I wanted to spend my life. I do what comes naturally and am always pushing myself to express my perspective in new ways whether that’s through my music, photography, style, etc. My tribe keeps me grounded and in that, I’m able to create honestly.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! Haha nothing about my path has been smooth and it’s not for the faint of heart. The truth and biggest struggle I find is that no one else in the world has done or is doing what I’m doing the way I’m doing it. Unlike other professions, there’s no one blueprint or one person’s footsteps I can follow to show me the way. I’m having to make a mosaic of inspiration if you will – piecing it together one by one. Taking knowledge from here and there and making it work in a way that makes sense for me in this new world. That’s the hardest. Having a vision that no one else can see and trusting yourself to push and make it happen even if people think you’re crazy or things look stagnant for a time. If there was anything else I WAS good at I’d be doing that because I’m positive it would be easier but that’s not for me and I’m going to keep pushing until this thing blows wide open. Don’t let other people’s fears and lack of understanding cloud your view of your life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a multidisciplinary artist. I’ve got my degree in Music Theatre and performing is my passion. I’m working on putting out my EP – studio time is expensive so it’s been a while coming but it’s on the way. I’d say I’m most known for my creative vision confidence and style. I creative direct, style and photograph my shoots for clients and myself. I do commissioned artwork and handmade wearable art. I’m most proud of my single ‘Black Ice’ ft. Bryce Green available on all music platforms. I’m proud of the work I’ve done for artists like Toni Jones, who’s album art I creative directed and crown for her album cover I made. I’m proud of my makeup work especially that done for H.E.R in her “Fight For You” video done in 2021. Honestly, I’m proud of every single thing I’ve done and my favorite project is typically my last. My eye sets me apart from others I see things not for what they are but what they can be and it always leads to a new and exciting piece of work.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I encourage all artists to create for themselves and let what flows flow. Be honest. Be kind. Be and make the art you wish to see in the world.
