Rising Stars: Meet Joseph Jewell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Jewell.

Hi Joseph, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved from Sault Ste Marie MI in early 2016, shortly after getting out of basic training, to my sister’s house in Westland to pursue more opportunities than my small town had to offer. I found employment in the welding industry in welding. I stayed in that field until about 2019. During that period, I met my wife, had two children, and bought a house in Wayne MI next thing I knew we had baby number three on the way. So, in efforts to create more financial freedom, I created Not Your Average Joe’s Remodel, where I mostly did subcontract work and handyman services in the residential construction industry. Fast forward to 2022 when I finished all of my courses to become a certified home inspector through InterNACHI, I am in the early stage of starting this company (Jewell Inspection Services) while supplementing my income with My previous business. I chose to pursue self-employment as a way to generate more income than a typical 9-5 and create more time freedom so I can provide the best experience for my family!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t really been the smoothest road. I’ve been the most broke I have ever been while self-employed but I’ve also made more money than I ever have, it has highs and lows for sure. One of the biggest challenges is making sure I’m doing everything legit; filing taxes, and only doing work that I am legally allowed to do. Some of the other issues are saving enough money for slow times and how much “office” or “behind the scenes” work that goes into it. Invoicing, creating material lists, scheduling, bidding work. There is a lot. This is one of the reasons I chose to switch into home inspecting.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a home inspector, I represent my client, generally, that would be someone purchasing a house. My job is to look at all major systems of a home and look for defects and report that to my client. This helps them make a well-informed decision on whether or not the house would be right for them. I can also perform an inspection for someone who plans on selling so they can decide if they want to repair that part of the home or be better prepared if the buyer asks to adjust the price based on any defects the buyer’s inspector finds.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up on Sugar Island which is technically part of Sault Ste Marie. I am the 3rd child of six and both my older sisters moved out before I could remember anything. Growing up I always loved tools and building things although I didn’t have much guidance. I remember taking remotes and toys apart whenever I had a chance and as I got older, I would read books about repairing things and I just always had a mechanical affinity I would help my grandfather repair deck boards and do brake jobs, or really anything he was working on. As I got into high school I found that most of my favorite classes where trade classes, at the time I really liked welding and machining. I even got a part-time job, thanks to the co-op program at my school, as a welder.
