Daily Inspiration: Meet DeAuvia Rucker

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeAuvia Rucker.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my creative journey in August of 2020. I literally woke up one morning and voiced to my friend how I wanted to direct and put photoshoots together for people who needed help in that area. I remember saying how I was looking for something passion-driven and something I could have fun doing. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and a semester away from having a Master’s degree in it. After graduating I worked several low-wage jobs but, I loved what I did. For me being a creative included a part of Social Work; I have to be my true self to make my clients feel comfortable. It was hard trying to figure out how I could make a business out of creating, but my friend wanted to start photography so he suggested us two work together on shoots. I started off doing set design, making the clients’ vision come to life. Then I realized I could pose direct them and help make sure everything is going smoothly during the shoot. My first few months were fun and made me feel like I finally found my purpose. I realized my purpose was to always be a creative and make others feel great about themselves. I enjoy what I do so much and I feel blessed to wake up every day after doing this for over a year and do what I love. Entrepreneurship is such an up and down journey but, I wouldn’t change the growth I’ve experienced throughout this time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest struggle was the monetary aspect. I had to figure out how I could use the best of my time and still survive in the real world. I’ve realized the money will come just better myself and my craft so that my work can speak for itself. Another big struggle and still is is the discipline you have to have. I went from working a 9-5 five days out the week to EVERY DAY for my business. I constantly have to work late nights and early mornings to keep the content coming. I have to make sure I market myself correctly and make a name for myself. I live in a very creative city where it’s a lot of creatives and photographers doing what I do. I have to stay in my own lane but, also make sure people will remember my brand. Throughout this year I also started photography to broaden my horizons and not depend on anyone else. It’s been a tough journey but, it’s worth every struggle.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My titles are a Creative Director/ Set designer/ Photographer. I am in love with doing set design and bringing clients’ ideas to life but, I also started photography and have been doing that for over 7 months now. I was blessed to have a partner who was my photographer for all of my shoots to help me learn how to use my camera and edit my own pictures. Of course, I’ve had to do my own research but, teamwork makes the dream work. I would say my specialty is set design and directing shoots although I’m super good at photography also. I think it’s important to always learn new things because you can never learn too much. I am such an extroverted person people grasp to me quickly. I have the ability to make people feel super comfortable around me so if you come to the studio just know it’s going to be a great vibe and a good time.
