Today we’d like to introduce you to Bailey Perkins-Studebaker.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I found my love and passion for cosmetology and beauty a bit later on in the game but it honestly all started while I was styling my fellow cheerleaders in high school. After graduating high school in 2013, I decided to attend Western Michigan University, but after one semester, I knew in my heart, I wasn’t where I belonged. My parents always taught me to make a plan, and stick to it, so I made the decision to follow the little flicker of light cosmetology brought to my life. I began school at Protégé Academy in 2014 and was given some of the most amazing experiences, including my study abroad education in Rome and Milan Italy. While in school, I discovered my love for bridal hair. After graduating my program, I was given an amazing opportunity to join the team at Capellini Salon, where I run my booth and am able to do freelance bridal party work!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I can honestly say, the road I chose to travel has not always been smooth. While working through my program, I worked as a server at a golf course and studied for my licensing exam in the kitchen when I had downtime, after receiving my license, the week prior to my start at Capellini Salon, ALL of my work equipment, aside from a hairdryer, was stolen from me. I worked extra shifts at the restaurant to pay for my unexpected loss. As a chair rental/freelance stylist, it is required that I drum up my own business, I spent hours in the salon waiting for walk-ins and last-minute calls, and I ran a Groupon, where so many of my amazing guests found me. One of my favorite side hustles was cutting hair at a fraternity house at MSU for $10 per head, it was like a funny little assembly line.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist, specializing in wedding hair, and dark, dimensional hair color. I provide other salon services as well, including color, blonding, and haircuts for all genders and ages. I find that my honesty, transparency, and care sets me apart from others. I love connecting with all different types of people. I enjoy learning about your life, your family, and everything in between. I have been given the opportunity to hear stories from all over the world, and human connection is by far my favorite thing about this industry.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe my dedication to my guests is extremely important to the success of my business. My goal is not only to give each person who sits in my chair great hair but to give them an individualized experience, including custom color for each guest. My work ethic is also a HUGE part of my success. I travel where ever is necessary for the bridal side of my business, and I work hard to learn the dynamics of your life and family in order to better service my brides and grooms. On any wedding day, I become a therapist, a mediator, a hype woman, and anything else you may need on your special day!
