Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrianne Malone.
Hi Adrianne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from David Presley school of cosmetology in 2011. From 2001 until 2017, I worked for various spas within the metro Detroit area. On July 17, 2017, I started my own business, A’Marie‘s day spa, now known as A’Maries Skin Bar. Starting my own business was not a part of my plan.
Unfortunately, the job I was working at, which was a spa located in Berkley, Michigan, decided to close, refused to pay me my last check, and locked me out of the system. I only had $400 in my bank account on that day and I decided that I was done allowing others to control my life, so I started my own business.
I subleased a room from a friend of mine in the industry, who was renting a room inside of another Spa in Royal Oak, Michigan. I subleased this room for about 2 1/2 months before I officially rented out my own space in Southfield, Michigan. In June 2020, after we were allowed to reopen after to COVID-19 shutdown, my business skyrocketed. I was already doing great, but re-opening after the shutdown, business went through the roof.
I was booked with clients 2 to 3 months in advance, so it was time to hire another therapist and a receptionist to accommodate my growing business. By April 2021, business was growing so rapidly I made the decision to open a second location. In August 2021, I opened my second location in Warren, Michigan and I hired three additional therapists and another receptionist. Growing my team from a team of three to a team of seven.
This journey hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I have never taken out a small business loan, I didn’t receive any PPP loan money, I don’t have any investors, I don’t have any partners. Oh but I can’t take credit for everything, I’ll give all credit to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He has blessed me with all of this, I couldn’t imagine being where I am today, especially when all I had to my name four years ago was $400.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, besides learning how to use social media to build my clientele base, the road hasn’t been too rough for me. I know there are so many people struggling with building clientele, getting their name out there, but it hasn’t been hard for me. The scariest part was the shutdown in March 2020. But even after that, my business grew triple time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a Black Woman-Owned Spa Business, trying to do our part in the community by hiring people who look like us to service people who look like us. We offer skincare services, such as back facials, standard facials, chemical peels, and other body treatments. We also specialize in body waxing including female and male Brazilian waxing.
We are known for respecting everyone’s time by starting each and every appointment on time. Every service is customized for the customer. No cookie-cutter, no one size fits all. We provide a safe, calm, and clean environment. We use all-natural products, some organic and vegan friendly.
We carry SkinScript RX, Bioelements, Green Envee, and Face Reality skincare products.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I have learned on this journey is that you never stop learning. There is always a new obstacle, this industry is always growing and changing, so you had to keep your ear to the ground and be willing and open to learning new skills.
