Hidden Gems: Meet Ebony Wakefield of Children At Play Event Childcare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Wakefield. 

Hi Ebony, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I have always loved caring for children ever since I was a young girl. It wasn’t until I had my son and he started attending a Headstart Program that I realized I should go into Early Childhood Education. At the time my son was attending the Headstart Program, I was also attend Macomb Community College. I was taking general courses because I hadn’t decided on a Major. When I was almost done with taking my general courses, I decided that I should major in Early Childhood Education. That was the best decision I ever made! I received my Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Macomb Community College in May 2016. I worked as a Child & Youth Program Assistant for the Department of the Army for five years. I’ve always wanted to open my own Child Development Center and while doing my research on childcare, I discovered a void in the childcare industry and created a safe, fun environment for children while their parents are participating in life’s moments. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Children At Play Event Childcare was launched in August 2019. The road has been far from smooth. CAPEC was just established right before the Covid-19 Pandemic. It has been a struggle because the company sole purpose is to provide Event Childcare Services. Because of the pandemic, there has been restrictions on how many guest are invited to events (weddings, corporate functions, social gatherings, etc.).

As a mother and professional with over five years of experience in the childcare industry, I have committed to building a business that would empower other parents to take advantage of opportunities without concern for last-minute childcare. Our professional caregivers offer children a fun, interactive, and engaging environment at event spaces. CAPEC provides a comprehensive package which includes toys, games, arts & crafts, and music & movement, converting a multitude of event spaces into a child-friendly zone. 

How do you think about happiness?
I love to see other people happy! Nothing makes me more happier than to see other people doing good and to know that they are okay.
