Life & Work with Anna Stolarski and Wyatt Youngblood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Stolarski and Wyatt Youngblood.

Hi Anna and Wyatt, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When my partner Wyatt Youngblood and I met 4 years ago, Wyatt introduced me to the world of restoration. We live in a 132-year-old house in Detroit which Wyatt started restoring a couple years after he moved to Detroit in 2013. He has 15 years of experience in woodworking and 10 years of experience in client work, specializing in historic restoration.

After years of client work and making other people’s dreams come true, we decided it was time to invest in our future and be the ones in charge of the design decisions and project process. I brought my program management experience and he brought his historic restoration knowledge to the table to form Revival 4106 LLC, a house restoration business that focuses on the details, the correct restoration process, and the unique charm that so many of these Detroit homes have.

We purchased a home right here in our Detroit neighborhood to restore which we refer to as ‘4106’ and have been bringing it back to life. We now have the freedom and ability to make the design choices and ensure that the historic characteristics stay intact. We can also ensure that everything is done correctly since Wyatt and I are doing everything ourselves from the entire interior to the exterior!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We are firm believers that nothing worthwhile in life is easy. When you restore an old home there are always going to be surprises under layers and years of cover up. When you find a surprise though you just have to take a deep breath, make a plan and carry on. My biggest advice before you restore a home is have a really good inspection done so you can budget, budget, budget.

The other challenge has been time! I help whenever I can but Wyatt as one person can only do so much in a day! For example, we stripped all the trim in the house which had over 4 layers of paint on it plus stain. This definitely took some time but was more than worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Wyatt has always been an artist and has worked in multiple mediums over the years but he found his love of restoration at the age of 8 when he starting helping his mom restore furniture. We have an entire attic full of furniture that we’ll be restoring!

As Wyatt’s partner, I can’t say enough how proud of him I am. Wyatt was diagnosied with Autism last year and we’ve come to realize that there is not a lot of representation of neurodiverse individuals in this field. We decided to include this because we hope that it inspires or gives hope to even just one person in the neurodiverse community and want them to know that their dreams are valid and attainable. We recognize how difficult some days can be though and we hope in the coming years to see more representation and support in this industry.

Even though at times it’s been an uphill battle we’re so happy to be on this journey and knew there was a shift the moment we purchased 4106. We will be venturing on to other homes after this one and can’t wait for what the future is going to hold!
