Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiara Boyd.
Hi Tiara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always loved beauty. I made money in high school doing eyebrows during lunch and ponytails after school. I didn’t go into the beauty industry right after high school, instead I went into media broadcasting, and communications. One of my colleagues in media had an opportunity to get me into Chrysler and I took the opportunity. After year one in Chrysler, my face broke out tremendously due to the fumes. I took it upon myself to find out how to correct my skin myself, so I went to esthetician school at David Pressley in 2018.
I graduated the 1st in my class, awarded the most clientele and best customer service. I went to school just to correct my skin, not knowing it would turn into my passion and people loving my work.
I worked from home for a year only making $800 for the entire year, but I never quit. I wanted to perfect my craft. 2019 I went to work in a salon, & 3 months later getting my own studio in Southfield, where I also had a boutique and a lash studio. Which I still have today.
My business grew tremendously the beginning of 2020, and then COVID hit, shutting me down for months. No grants or loans were given to me and I had to find a way to make my business flourish despite the circumstances.
Once Covid restrictions were lifted my clients flooded my books! Shortly after I was given a 2-week eviction notice & was told I had to leave the studio due to no rental payments during Covid (which they failed their payment plan promise).
That turned me off & I immediately went searching for a new location. That’s when I found the Hamtramck location & was accepted by the property manager with open hands.
I slept at the Hamtramck location day & night until I completed renovations. Opening May 2021. In the midst, Southfield’s location lifted the eviction. Now having 2 locations.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Besides nearly getting evicted, the road got really bumpy June 2021 when my business was racially & sexually discriminated against by members of some ZBA in Hamtramck. It would have shut my business down and all my hard work and sleepless nights would have went to waste if I allowed them to do so. I fought back, protested, and stood up for my business. I now having the zoning clearance, and I’m now an appointed member of Hamtramck’s Human Relation board.
