Exploring Life & Business with Lydia Michael of Blended Collective

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lydia Michael.

Hi Lydia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Germany, and culture has shaped everything I do.

My career in the U.S. started in digital media and marketing at the Detroit Jazz Festival. From there, I moved to an artist relations and management firm based in Detroit and Los Angeles, along with its independent record label. Over five years, I led global marketing and operations, helping develop and manage Grammy-winning artists and their brands internationally. That’s where I learned how deeply people connect with the things they love.

My first business came out of my love for language and culture. With a small team, I provided English and German business, language, and cultural services to automotive expats in metro Detroit.

In 2015, I moved back to Germany to earn my International MBA alongside classmates from 11 countries. It was a full-circle moment. When I left my hometown in 2005, I never got to graduate with my friends. This time, I did. While there, I also did project work with Deloitte and L’Oréal in Düsseldorf.

All of that led to Blended Collective. My diverse upbringing and international experience gave me a clear vision to enrich brands and experiences through emotion. Alongside the launch, I created Blended, a speaker event series I curated and hosted for two years.

Today, Blended Collective is a Detroit-based marketing and brand consultancy. We work with startups, small businesses, nonprofits, and mission-driven organizations to help them build and grow brands people feel connected to. That work became a framework, and the framework became a book. In 2023, I published Brand Love: Building Strong Consumer Brand Connections. It became a #1 international bestseller on Amazon, has been translated into Turkish and Vietnamese, and is now used in university programs and research around the world.

Teaching keeps me sharp. I teach digital marketing at Lawrence Technological University and global marketing and branding at my alma mater Pforzheim University in Germany, and I’ve guest lectured in Vanderbilt’s Executive MBA program.

I’m also proud to serve on the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Board of Trustees. Outside of work, you’ll find me traveling, trying new foods, discovering music, or hunting for vintage eyewear. My favorite part of owning a business is meeting people, hearing their stories, and helping them unlock what’s possible. I believe we create the life we strive for.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, and I think that’s true for most people who create their own path.

Moving between countries meant starting over more than once. When I came to the U.S., and again when I moved back to Germany for my MBA, I had to rebuild my network, prove myself in a new environment, and figure out where I fit. That takes time, and it takes patience you don’t always feel like you have.

Changing industries was its own challenge. Going from music and entertainment to language services to brand strategy and consulting, I had to keep showing people that the skills carried over. Understanding why fans fall for an artist isn’t so different from understanding why customers fall for a brand. But that connection isn’t always obvious to others at first.

Then there’s the reality of running your own business. Some seasons are full and some are quiet. You wear every hat, and you’re always balancing doing the work with finding the next opportunity. Writing a book while running a consultancy and teaching on two continents made that balance even harder.

What got me through was staying curious and staying connected. The people I’ve met along the way, mentors, clients, students, and communities like Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses, made the hard stretches easier. Every challenge taught me something.

As you know, we’re big fans of Blended Collective. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Blended Collective is a Detroit-based marketing and brand consultancy. We help brands stay current enough to be relevant and different enough to be memorable, so growth doesn’t come at the cost of connection.

Markets shift fast. What made a brand relevant last year won’t keep it relevant next year. That’s the challenge we help our clients solve, through brand strategy, positioning, messaging, and growth. We work with small and mid-sized businesses, nonprofits, municipalities, and technical assistance providers Many of our clients are at a turning point. They’re launching, growing, or realizing their brand no longer reflects who they’ve become. What sets us apart is Brand Love, the framework at the heart of everything we do. It maps how people move from noticing a brand to trusting it to staying loyal, and what drives them from one stage to the next. Most brands lead with logic first. We start with emotion, because emotion opens the door and logic closes the deal.

Beyond one-on-one consulting and working with clients, we lead workshops, cohort programs, and speaking engagements for business owners, founders, and the organizations that support them.

I’m most proud of seeing Brand Love grow beyond our own work. It started as my master’s thesis at L’Oréal Germany. From there, it shaped how I approach client work at Blended Collective, became the focus of my talks at marketing conferences across the country, and eventually turned into a book. Today, it’s taught in graduate business programs at Vanderbilt and the University of South Carolina, among others. Knowing future marketers are learning it means a lot.

I’m also proud of our recent rebrand earlier this year (2026). We spend our days helping clients evolve, so it felt right to do the same. If there’s one thing I want readers to know, it’s that the strongest brands are felt, not just followed.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Listening for what people actually need. Not just what they ask for.

Clients often come to me saying they need a new logo, a website, or more followers. Sometimes they do. But usually there’s something underneath: a message that doesn’t make sense, an audience that has shifted, or a brand that no longer reflects who they’ve become. My job is to ask the right questions, listen closely, and find the real need. That’s where the work that moves a business starts.

The other piece is adaptability. Every client is different. A startup founder, a nonprofit, and an established business owner each need something different, and I meet them where they are. I think my background helps. Growing up in Germany, working across various industries and teaching students from all over the world taught me to adjust quickly and connect with all kinds of people.

I also try to make the process easy. Building and growing a brand can feel overwhelming, so I want working with me to feel collaborative, clear, and enjoyable. When clients feel comfortable, they open up. And when they open up, the best ideas emerge.
