Life & Work with Ashley Cummings of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Cummings.

Hi Ashley, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I actually fell into nails on accident you could say. I had my cosmetology license and I wasn’t doing anything with it at the time. I had reached out to the salon I had worked at previously as housekeeper & they told me they weren’t looking for a housekeeper BUT we’re looking for a nail tech and they knew I had my license. I had always worked two jobs up until covid & it changed my perspective on things. My salon closed and I found a new salon home, it was my home up until almost 2 years ago.

I had my daughter, went on maternity leave and as soon as I came back i fractured my arm. During that time i had a lot of time to think about what my next business move was, i looked at my numbers & seen i was more than capable of doing this all on my own. Even knowing this I did go back to working at the salon while I looked for a place of my own.

When I officially returned to work I was greeted with my boss telling me how she was financially recovering still from my maternity leave constantly. At that point I knew I needed to leave.

I found my space & two weeks later I was settled in and happy as can be. I’ve met so many people along the way and have grown so much. There is so much more to come.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely was never smooth sailing & in the beauty industry it rarely is. Working two jobs at first and long hours to make things work were my main struggles, very tiring. It can also be discouraging at first when your trying to build a client relationship and keep consistency on your books.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and beauty business owner. I specialize in natural nail care and luxury spray tans. I am most proud of where I am now.

What sets me apart from others is I continue my education and I am always looking for better ways to do things. Most people once they get licensed they just work, but never stop being a student.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck in the sense I fell into the right space at the right time.
