Check Out Brandi Gaston’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Gaston.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Procrastination Bakery started as a means to make ends meet during the shutdown in 2020. The amount of entrepreneurial stories that have begun with that very statement is both astounding and powerful. The pivot brought out that spirit in a lot of folks, myself included. I looked inside myself to find my gifts, my talents, the skills gained throughout employment as well as motherhood, added up in the girl math way, and started a baking business. My passion for good food and loving on people really fit together like a hand in a food safety glove if you will. There was no could I do this, it was I’m going to do this and learn & fail as I go.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If any entrepreneur or business owner tells you the ride has been smooth they were either on a very short ride on a nice easy street, or they’re lying to save face. Heck no it is not easy working for yourself. Thinking you’ll save time? You’re going to be investing so much more time into your business than someone in a 9-5. One of the biggest struggles is keeping on in a place where small business is meant to fall prey to big box or franchise. Starting from scratch was hard for me because all I knew was how to make something delicious for people, I had to learn the food laws for particular products in my area and what was allowed to be sold to the public from home which I can tell you is pretty strict, but safety is a priority for the consumer and not everyone holds that standard. Bookkeeping, marketing, literally all that goes into running a business was new to me. Fortunately, we have a local resource built to recognize entrepreneurship, providing programs owners can apply for to grow their business gaining priceless knowledge from credible sources and trailblazer business owners in the community.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Artist & creative fits what I do more than the other options because it’s not only baked goods done here, it’s dessert catering and setting up gorgeous tables to display the desserts, bringing to the table the best we have, made with love, care, extreme thought into the vision of the client. Being told “IT LOOKS LIKE MY PINTEREST BOARD BLEW UP” was the highest compliment received if you ask my kids. As a creative, taking a blank canvas like a cake or a table and turning it into something beautiful is in my soul. It’s who I am. Art is in endless forms. I make it from food and pretty flowers with mood lighting.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
FOOD TRAILER OWNER AND OPERATOR, BABY! I have been working on a custom dessert food trailer for a couple years with a few life homeowner setbacks in the path to slow things down, but what we have on the menu is unlike any food truck or trailer in our area. We filled the gap between dinner & dessert. You didn’t know there was a gap?! You ever walked the entire food truck row only to find yourself standing there trying to decide between dinner or dessert? Come to me. We’ll hit that sweet & savory spot all in one bite. Thirsty? We got that too. I’m so excited for the years to come and all the learning moments in between.
