Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Davenport.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I became the owner of Detroit’s Future is Female in 2022, although the brand itself was originally founded in Detroit in 2016. When I took it over, I saw an opportunity to build on what people already loved about the brand while also exploring what its next chapter could look like.
Since then, I’ve been focused on growing DFF through apparel, accessories, pop-ups, partnerships and community-centered experiences. This year, we’ve also been testing new concepts like custom hat and patch experiences to see how they might fit into the future of the brand, but we’re still very much in the process of learning what resonates most with our audience.
A lot of my journey has been about evolving in real time. I’ve balanced building the business with my career, motherhood and everyday life, while learning more about what it takes to grow a brand sustainably and intentionally.
Right now, I’m focused on strengthening the DFF brand, growing our community, expanding partnerships and creating more ways for people to connect with what we stand for. At its core, Detroit’s Future is Female is about celebrating women, Detroit and the role we all play in shaping what comes next.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. A lot of my time as the owner has been spent learning the business, understanding our customer and figuring out what DFF can become beyond people simply loving the name or the message.
One thing that has always been encouraging is that the brand tends to resonate with people immediately. They hear “Detroit’s Future is Female,” understand what it represents and want to support it. The challenge has been turning that recognition and excitement into a strong, engaged community and a business model that is both profitable and sustainable long term.
Even now, we’re in a season of rebranding and restructuring. We’re taking a closer look at our identity, our product offerings, how we show up and what makes the most sense for the future of the business. That process has required a lot of trial and error, testing ideas, learning what works and being willing to change what doesn’t.
I think one of the biggest lessons has been realizing that having a brand people connect with is only one piece of the puzzle. You still have to build the systems, community and strategy around it that allow the business to grow.
We’ve been impressed with Detroit’s Future Is Female, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Detroit’s Future is Female is a Detroit-based lifestyle brand rooted in women, culture and community. Through apparel, accessories, pop-ups and creative experiences, we create ways for people to connect with a message that celebrates women and Detroit.
What sets DFF apart is how quickly the name and mission resonate with people. We’re currently evolving the brand, refining our product offerings and exploring new experiences as we build a stronger, more sustainable community around DFF.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is building a community of women and allies who can carry this message forward for the next generation of girls. As a mother of two daughters, that is deeply personal to me. They are part of my legacy, and I want them to grow up feeling empowered, confident and capable of making a meaningful difference in the world.
