Rising Stars: Meet Stanislav Harcinik of Other

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stanislav Harcinik.

Hi Stanislav, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Former Journey:
Stanislav Harciník is native to Bytča, Slovakia where he graduated from high school. After graduation, he moved to Bratislava to study at the Comenius Faculty of Sciences. In addition to his education, he worked in El Gaucho, a legend in Bratislava’s restaurant community, where he had the chance to interact with many successful Slovak bartenders. While working as a barback, Stan gained many contacts in this community and became enchanted with gastronomy to such a large extent that he decided to devote his all to the industry.

His first encounter with professional bartending occurred at Bratislava IceBar where he gained necessary knowledge for event organisation. While working at IceBar he cooperated with Michal (Majky) Trizuliak who significantly influenced the direction of his journey in the industry. Stan’s desire for new experiences resulted in him leaving Bratislava in 2015. His career continued to develop in Cuba Libre, Košice where he took up the position of head bartender and became immersed in the city’s bar culture.

In 2016, he moved back to Bratislava, where he and the aforementioned Majky opened a concept in the centre of the Old Town called SPIN Cocktail Bar. His love of bartending, organisational skills, and his drive to discover and combine new flavours, allowed him to grow from bartender into a bar manager within only two years.

In 2018 Stan witnessed the launch of The Velvet, which he helped open as head bartender. After gaining sufficient experience he left once again as a more experienced bartender. It was there that he met his future business partner with who they helped create a game-changing concept in Bratislava’s gastronomic scene where he acted as head bartender and became co-creator of the Sexi Dog together with chef Dušan Platko.

In 2020, Stan’s Journey led him to Mirror Cocktail Bar in Bratislava which is located in the Carlton Hotel. He took up the position of head bartender and became the content director in Slovakia’s best-printed media bartender magazine Bar Magazine-Thinking about Drinking.

His experience and knowledge shone once again when he co-founded a gastronomic initiative known as We Host You, which aims to increase gastronomy standards in Slovakia and educate young Slovak bartenders. Lastly, he is also a co-creator of Balance Cocktail Ingredients.

Stan’s inspiration for this book was a culmination of his hard-earned experience and knowledge passed down from previous vgenerations of Slovak bartenders. It was the transfer of knowledge and the care for the future generations
that inspired Stan to create the book you now hold in your hands.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It never was, especially when I started without the hospitality background at all, but overcoming the struggles was always part of my identity so actually embracing myself with pushing through the things that were making me uncomfortable was part of the journey. But yes especially over the starting years there where plenty of times that I felt like quitting because seeing over the horizon for new opportunities or “reason” why to push myself more was making me doubtful.

While in the end, the more I grew and more I overcame, the more I see the reason why and in the end it turned into being more of a mission, lifestyle or however we can call it, but not a work or a hobby.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I`m definitely a risk-taker. Especially with my work, because when Im passionate and decicated to something, I see almost no limits towards it and I make everything possible to make the things happen. Especially after all this years in industry and all the obstacled you are going through within time, you learn that nothing is impossible. Some things just need some more time, or little more experience or more capital/budget to make it happen. And thats the only thing.

Only things that is hard to get is that you need to surround yourself with right people that believe in you or in your vision and with that you can make happen anything.

And of course I took many, but maybe one to mention was when over 5 year ago as 28 years old I decided to publish my first cocktail book. I didnt believed first to it myself becuase I always saw that I was too young, or dont have enought to say. Dont have enough money, or support or reach. But you never know until you ask and you cannot tell until you try. But in the end I realized. Who else, when not me, and when if not now. And that was the decision, risk and we get in.

Put together the right team that each of them is best at what they do and can make that thing happen and let each one of it, including me to do what their do best and let them do it with full trust.
