Meet Tanya DeClercq

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya DeClercq.

Hi Tanya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was little, I read to escape daily life. It was strange but I even read Shakespeare and Longfellow. Really anything I could get my hands on to take me away from reality for a bit. As a teenager, I wrote poetry to get my emotions out. Even thought I was a big deal with The National Library of Poetry included one of mine in their book.

For a long time, I lost my voice. Caught up in life, going through what I thought was expected of me. What I should focus on. I still read but I no longer wrote anything.

Then, about 6 years ago now, my life changed. It took a few years for me to find my footing again but when I did, I made a choice. There was nothing stopping me anymore from writing the book I always dreamed of writing.

Was I afraid? Terrified. It shows in my first two books. Yet, they are my proof that I can do it. Will I ever achieve my dream of being a successful full-time author? I don’t know. I hope so. At least I can provide someone else with an escape or inspiration to follow their dreams.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth? Definitely not. From self-doubt, some very unhelpful people in the industry, to making the wrong choices. It’s all been a learning process. One I’m grateful for in the long run.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an independent author. My work spans from a line of reading journals to a heartfelt short story to a paranormal fantasy series to a mafia romance. I’m not stopping there though. I have plans to release an epic fantasy and a fairy tale reimagining in 2027. Eventually I want to be able to provide almost every reader’s favorite fantasy.

What matters most to you?
Being true to myself. I’m not perfect. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life. I spent too much time forgetting to make myself a priority, or trying to be other people’s version of perfect. I want to be happy. Hopefully in doing so, others will never forget they matter too.
