Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelli Evans.
Hi Kelli, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Greetings my name is Kelli Evans also formally known as Kae Marie. My journey was started before I was even aware of it. My grandfather opened a barbershop in the Flint area back in 1946, which stayed open until Covid took place throughout that time in the early 90s I used to go and visit my grandpa on the weekends me and my siblings. My dad and older cousin also worked in the barbershop with my grandpa, so the influence of Hair was very strong within our family. throughout time of been in that type of atmosphere is struck my interest, with being a girl from From Flint positive influences are most definitely needed. I was 11 years old when I took my first client a childhood friend of mine seen that I could braid hair and she paid me $25 for some braids to the back and that’s where my journey began…. I play basketball and tennis to keep my mind disciplined, but with having a clientele like I did it kind of drew me from sports throughout the years I obtained other jobs. I even worked for GENERAL motors at one point. Nothing paid me like being a Hairstylist. I never really took it serious until 2015 when my mother passed away, she was my biggest influencer. She always pushed me to move forward because she seem more potential than me than I seen it myself so in 2019 I obtained my cosmetology license I attended the Beauty Institute located in Bertron, Michigan in 2021 I opened up a salon in Westland, Michigan, which only lasted for about two years due to the establishment not being all the way up-to-date. I was forced to close. Never let that stop me though I kept moving forward, still building clientele throughout the Michigan area. I know have a location that I work at in Flin Township Michigan, and also another location that I work at in Troy Michigan. I don’t believe Hair is just my final calling however I do believe that is placed on my heart not to just make a person look good, but I love the fact that I have the ability to make a person feel good about themselves never know what discernment is placed on you in order to help another young lady or young man in their time of need so that is what I do. I stand before you 24 years in the cosmetology, industry, thriving, and doing really well.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the struggles I faced along the way would be keeping consistent clientele due to me living in the area that is based on poverty trying to make sure I’m not moving backwards is the biggest thing just because with a skill like being a Hairstylist you wanna move forward with the economy but if the economy isn’t moving forward in that area, it’s kind of hard to adjust your life because the people that you’ve gained as a client may not be able to keep up with your expectations in regards to growth adjustments
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in haircutting and color I have a lot of clients that come to me that it’s just tired of wearing weaves and want to wear their own hair but may not comfortably be able to do so so what I do I go and I analyze the issue and I come up with a solution 60% of my clientele, I would say suffer from some form of alopecia, however I do provide other services like extensions as far as tape ends K tips sewing and more was sent me aside from other STYLIST is that I’m versatile with any ethnicity that requires a service. No one is leaving my chair left feeling like there not gonna pop it lol but for better words, no money has been left on the floor some STYLIST only do it just for the money. I honestly love what I do. You never know how someone day you can be darken and you can be that light to their darkness as a STYLIST we’re not just Hair Stylist or counselors or sisters for friends. This is a forever ongoing relationship.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a tomboy growing up. I rode bikes. Climb trees played in dirt. I never seen myself as a Hair Stylist honestly, like I said, I was born into it before I even knew I wanted to be a mortician people always ask me why they would say I would be afraid to Work Work with the Dead An, my response would be it’s not the dead that you should be afraid of it. The people that’s alive that’s scary.
