Today we’d like to introduce you to Winterlyn Stebner.
Hi Winterlyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Chicago in a hardworking, blue-collar family. Growing up, I did not know anyone who had built a career around art or creativity, so becoming a professional photographer was never something I imagined for myself. I simply knew that I loved photography and that it made me feel creative in a way nothing else did.
What began as something I genuinely enjoyed slowly turned into Winterlyn Photography. I built the business from the ground up while raising my family, and there was definitely no roadmap. I learned photography, marketing, social media, client communication, and all the behind-the-scenes pieces that come with running a small business. There were plenty of moments when I had to figure things out as I went, but I kept showing up, learning, and trusting that I was building something meaningful.
More than 12 years and 500 weddings later, I still cannot believe this is what I get to do. I have photographed celebrations at some of Chicago’s most beautiful venues, met so many wonderful people, and been trusted with moments that families will carry with them for generations. My style has naturally grown into a mix of elevated, editorial portraits and honest, candid storytelling. I love creating beautiful images, but I never want a wedding to feel like a photo shoot. I want my couples to be fully present and enjoy their day while I preserve what it truly felt like.
I am incredibly proud to be the first person in my family to build a career through art. This business has allowed me to support my family, create a life doing something I love, and hopefully show my children that it is possible to build something meaningful from your creativity.
Today, I am still growing, learning, and finding new ways to serve my couples. I am proud of how far Winterlyn Photography has come, but I am just as excited about where it is going next.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. I built this business while raising four children, so one of the biggest challenges has always been finding a balance between being present for my family and giving my business the time and energy it needs. When you own a small business, the work does not end when you put the camera away. There are emails, editing, marketing, blogging, social media, networking, bookkeeping, and so many other responsibilities happening behind the scenes.
I also had to learn nearly every part of running a business on my own. I did not come from a family of entrepreneurs, and I did not have a roadmap or someone telling me what the next step should be. There were times when I questioned myself, compared my journey to other photographers, or wondered whether I was charging too much, too little, or making the right decisions for my business. The photography industry is constantly changing, and learning how to evolve without losing your own voice can be challenging.
One of the hardest lessons has been understanding that talent alone is not enough. You can be incredibly passionate about your craft, but you also have to learn how to market yourself, communicate your value, handle rejection, and continue showing up during slower seasons. There have certainly been moments when things felt uncertain, but those seasons taught me how resilient and resourceful I really am.
The challenges have also made me more intentional. I have learned to trust my experience, protect the life I have built, and define success for myself instead of measuring it by what everyone else is doing. I am still learning, but I think that is part of being both an artist and a business owner.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Chicago wedding photographer specializing in a blend of modern editorial portraiture and documentary storytelling. In simple terms, I create polished, beautifully composed photographs while also paying attention to the unscripted moments happening around me. I love the fashion, architecture, and details of a wedding day, but I am equally drawn to the emotion, movement, and relationships that make each celebration personal.
I am probably best known for being very calm while also giving my couples plenty of direction. Most people are not naturally comfortable in front of a camera, and I never expect them to arrive already knowing how to pose. I will step in, adjust the little things, and guide them in a way that feels natural. At the same time, I know when to pull back and allow a moment to happen without interrupting it. Finding that balance is a huge part of my approach.
I also care deeply about the experience my couples have beyond the photographs. I help them think through their timelines, locations, lighting, and the small logistical details that can completely change how a wedding day feels. After photographing more than 500 weddings, I can anticipate a lot of what is going to happen, but I never want to treat a wedding as routine. Every couple, family, and celebration deserves my full attention.
What I am most proud of is the trust I have built with my clients. I have photographed couples who first met me while I was photographing a friend’s wedding, families who have invited me back for new chapters of their lives, and people who tell me that having me there made them feel calmer and more present. Awards and publications are wonderful, but knowing that someone felt cared for and can relive their day through the photographs is what stays with me.
I believe what sets my work apart is that it can feel elevated without losing its emotion. I want the portraits to be beautiful enough to belong in a magazine, but I also want the full gallery to feel honest, joyful, and completely personal to the people in it.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I find inspiration in a lot of different places. I learn so much from the wedding community itself. Conversations with planners, venue teams, florists, and other photographers are incredibly valuable because everyone sees a wedding day from a different perspective. Some of the best lessons I have learned have come from simply listening to other professionals and sharing our experiences.
Instagram is also an important part of my work. It allows me to connect with couples and other wedding professionals, share education, and give people a more personal look at what happens behind the scenes of a wedding day.
Outside of work, I love mystery and suspense novels, British crime dramas, and classic black-and-white films. They may not be traditional business resources, but they give my mind somewhere else to go and help me recharge creatively. I think rest and curiosity are just as important as productivity, especially when your career requires you to constantly create.
