Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Kong.
Hi Jeffrey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When my daughter was born in 2007, my wife and I both worked full-time but we didn’t want to use day care. We tag-team parented for several years… till school. I realized my schedule wouldn’t allow me to see her more than dropping her off at school. I would get home from work and she would already be in bed. So in 2010 I decided to start my own business. I had support and mentoring from great people including my wife and respected friends/clients. I originally started the business to be a stay-at-home Dad and work while she was in school – that backfired! My business got busier and I ended up hiring other massage therapists. Many who used to be actual clients. After some sessions they would say “I want to do this for a living. How do I do that?”. I would answer with “go to massage school and get a massage license”. Soon they would work for me. Being your own employee in your own business is MUCH different than having employees, being a leader and managing people. Being responsible for other careers is a gift and a burden I learned to carry and accept. I spoke to a ton of professionals learning how to manage people, read all the books I could find, podcasts, etc… I just wanted to do good job for the people trusting me with their careers. I feel like I’ve tried hard but have failed some while learning to be better for the next employee(s).
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Things never go as planned. When the road is smooth for a moment you look ahead for the big “bump” approaching quickly. The struggles are usually people, equipment, building or third party companies you pay to do a “job” but don’t for a moment. Most of these issues are due to communication problems, maintenance problems or unfortunate things just happening. Like the internet stops working or the power goes out. We control what we can to prevent struggles from occurring. We can’t control the unfortunate things but we can control how we communicate and performing maintenance to increase the odds of a “smoother” road.
As you know, we’re big fans of Tri-Covery Massage & Flexibility. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are Performance & Recovery Specialists in Novi for pain relief, sports performance, and injury recovery. Using therapeutic Massage techniques, Assisted Stretching (FST) and Corrective Exercise to help clients experience less pain and more quality of life. Combining our three ways of recovery, Massage, Flexibility & Exercise to create a symbiotic environment for efficient natural recovery and healing. We are also one of the first assisted stretch facilities in the United States getting trained in multiple levels of world class certifications from Stretch To Win institute. This alongside our foundation of sports massage where we read the tissue like braille create a better connection with the muscle to the brain by stimulating or usually suppressing the nervous system with a variety of techniques. These are effective ways to loosen tight muscles around a joint or joints. Our corrective exercise is what really “closes the deal” for delivering long term results. Our Corrective Exercise Specialists helps the client move the way the joint or joints are designed to. Getting out of compensation patterns that create torque and imbalanced joints. Balance the joint and teach it to work with the joints around it and it creates quality movements the brain doesn’t fight the body with. Creating balanced joint means loosening what tight, tightening what loose (or not firing) and teaching to work with other joints.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
