Hidden Gems: Meet Dezmin McCoy of The DM Experience

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dezmin McCoy.

Hi Dezmin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey started in education, where I spent 12 years serving students and families as a teacher and instructional leader. Although education was my career and I am passionate about it, creativity had always been a major part of who I was. I loved transforming ordinary spaces, building custom pieces, and creating experiences that made people feel celebrated.

That passion eventually grew into The DM Experience, an event design and production company offering décor, floral and balloon installations, custom props, planning, and coordination. What began as a creative outlet developed into a full-service business serving weddings, corporate events, schools, nonprofit organizations, and milestone celebrations throughout Metro Detroit.

After balancing my business with a full-time career for years, I made the difficult decision to leave education and pursue entrepreneurship full-time. The transition has required faith, sacrifice, and a willingness to learn in real time, but it has also allowed me to see what is possible when I fully invest in my vision. Today, I am continuing to grow The DM Experience, expand my custom fabrication work, and work toward opening an event venue of my own. I am still in the middle of the journey, but I am proud of how far I have come and excited about what I am building.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. For years, I balanced entrepreneurship with a demanding career in education while also being a mother. Many days involved working at school, caring for my son, and then staying up late preparing for events, building props, or handling the administrative side of my business.

One of my biggest challenges has been transitioning from the security of a steady paycheck to the unpredictability of full-time entrepreneurship. Talent and hard work do not automatically create consistent income; you also have to master marketing, sales, pricing, cash flow, and business development. I have experienced slow seasons, financial pressure, plans that did not come together as quickly as I hoped, and moments when I questioned whether leaving my career was the right decision.

Another challenge is that many people do not fully understand what luxury events actually cost or how much work happens behind the scenes. Clients may see the finished transformation without seeing the design hours, labor, transportation, custom fabrication, rentals, florals, installation, staffing, and teardown required to produce it. Rather than simply becoming frustrated by that disconnect, I have made education part of my brand. Through price transparency and content that explains where event budgets go, I hope to help the public make informed decisions, set realistic expectations, and better understand the value of professional event design.

I have also been working toward opening my own event venue, and finding a property that is affordable, properly zoned, and financially sustainable has been much more complicated than I anticipated. Still, every challenge has made me more resourceful and strategic. I am learning to give myself grace while remaining accountable to the vision. The road has not been easy, and I am still navigating it, but I believe the difficult seasons are shaping me into a stronger business owner.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The DM Experience is a Metro Detroit-based event design, production, and planning company specializing in weddings, corporate events, school functions, nonprofit events, and milestone celebrations. We offer full-service event design, planning and coordination, floral and balloon installations, custom signage and props, lounge furniture, photo experiences, and other specialty rentals.

We are known for transforming ordinary spaces into immersive, personalized experiences. I do not believe beautiful events should feel copied and pasted. Every client has a different story, personality, and reason for celebrating, so each design should feel intentional and unique to them. Through our sister brand, The DM Prop Stop, we can also design and fabricate many of our own custom pieces. That ability allows us to create elements specifically for a client’s theme or vision instead of limiting the design to what is already available for rent.

What sets The DM Experience apart is the combination of creativity, strategy, and hands-on execution. My background in education has made me a natural problem-solver, communicator, and planner. I can develop the overall concept, manage the logistics, build custom pieces, and lead the team responsible for bringing everything together. Clients are not simply hiring someone to place decorations; they are hiring a partner who can guide them from the initial idea through the completed experience.

I am also passionate about transparency. The event industry often presents beautiful final images without explaining the labor, materials, staffing, and logistics behind them. I use my platform to educate clients about realistic budgets and openly discuss pricing so they can better understand what their investment provides. My goal is never to pressure someone into spending more, but to help them make informed choices and create the greatest impact within their budget.

Brand-wise, I am most proud that The DM Experience reflects both artistry and resilience. I have built a company capable of handling everything from an intimate celebration to a large-scale event while maintaining a personal connection with each client. I want readers to know that we do more than decorate rooms, we create thoughtful environments where people can celebrate, connect, and make lasting memories.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next five to ten years, I believe the event industry will become even more immersive, personalized, and technology-driven. Clients are moving beyond traditional décor and looking for experiences that make their guests feel transported. Projection mapping, interactive installations, customized lighting, digital displays, and other experiential elements will become more common, not only at major corporate events, but also at weddings and social celebrations.

I also believe clients will expect greater personalization. Trends will continue to influence events, but people increasingly want designs that reflect their own stories rather than recreating something they saw online. Custom fabrication, meaningful details, and flexible spaces that can be completely transformed will play a major role in that shift.

Another important change will be greater transparency surrounding pricing and value. Social media has increased access to event inspiration, but it can also create unrealistic expectations about what elaborate designs cost. I believe successful event professionals will need to educate clients, clearly communicate what goes into production, and offer creative options at different investment levels without compromising the integrity of their work.

Technology, including artificial intelligence, will also change how we develop concepts, communicate designs, manage logistics, and operate our businesses. However, I do not believe it will replace the creativity, problem-solving, craftsmanship, and human connection required to execute an event successfully.

Ultimately, I see the industry moving toward complete experiences rather than décor alone. That direction aligns with my long-term vision of opening a transformative event venue where design, custom fabrication, technology, and hospitality can come together under one roof.
