Today we’d like to introduce you to Kuja The Throat Singer.
Hi Kuja, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a teenager I heard Throat Singing for the first time on a Netflix show. Since then I’ve been captivated, and spent many years learning. My journey has taken me across the world and given me the opportunity to learn from masters of several different ethnic groups.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to learning throat singing was certainly not smooth. When I began all those years ago there were little resources on line and in English for me to learn from, and I had to teach myself by imitating the music I heard. It took hours or careful listening every day in order to grasp the technique in the beginning. That is why I find more passion in teaching than performing, because it makes that road smoother for someone else.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am most proud of my ability to grasp rare styles of throat singing that few people are able to perform in modern times for their technical difficulty. This allowed me to win the award Best Kargyraa at the international throat singing competition Echoes of the Steppe. This is a style of undertone or subharmonic singing which I’ve specialized in for my diligent study of its technique. More than anything I am proud to see the look on my student’s face when they succeed in singing themselves- that is the joy I live to see.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
The ability to engage in cultures aside from the ones we were raised in was a fundamental part of my growth. I am endlessly grateful to the Mongol, Tuvan, Altai, and Buriyat people for their reception of my heart. I encourage everyone to go and learn more about the world outside their own, even if it feels scary! It will always be worth it.
