Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Taylor.
Steve, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey with woodworking began long before this shop opened—it started when I was 15 years old in a custom cabinetry shop, learning the fundamentals of the trade.
Life took me on a detour at 21 when I enlisted in the Marine Corps, deploying to fight in Operation Iraqi Freedom. After being medically retired, I spent several years building tech startups in California. But despite the success, I missed the tangible satisfaction of creating something with my hands.
In 2016, I retired from the tech world and in 2019 I returned to my roots—both geographically and professionally. Now back home in Michigan, I’ve combined the discipline learned in the Corps with the precision required in tech to build high-quality, heirloom furniture. Every piece in this shop is built with a lifetime of experience and a passion for American craftsmanship.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think reliable delivery services are a big struggle. So many delays and damaged parcels these last few years.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I enjoy all the differences in wood, colors, grains, knots, burls it is always something new. Seeing a pile of rough lumber turn into something beautiful is such pure joy.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I owned a farm and ranch and raised dairy goats.
