Today we’d like to introduce you to Connor Donahue.
Hi Connor, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been sewing for as long as I can remember. My grandmother Lorraine taught me how to sew when I was very young, and I absolutely loved it — I took to it like water. I was constantly making things, whether it was sewing outfits for my sister’s dolls or cutting up the curtains to make Halloween costumes.
By high school, that hobby had turned into something much bigger. I was making and altering prom dresses for friends and classmates, and as soon as I turned 18, I officially started my business.
In the beginning, I was really making the things I dreamed of having but couldn’t afford to buy. I started designing and sewing my own designer clothing and continued doing that throughout college. Along the way, I had the opportunity to sew in France at a fashion house, design an entire collection, participate in fashion weeks including Rhode Island Fashion Week, and do countless pop-ups and retail partnerships where I carried my products in different stores.
Eventually, that evolution brought me to where I am today. I opened my flagship store in Hingham, where we’ve built the business into much more than just a clothing brand. We offer high-end tailoring and alterations, bridal work, monogramming and embroidery, custom garments, custom leather goods, and a full range of products that are designed and made in-house.
What started as a little me sitting at a sewing machine making things for fun has really grown into a full-fledged fashion and craftsmanship business — and I think the best part is that I still get to make things every day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve had every opportunity to quit you could imagine, and there have been endless amounts of people betting against me at every stage. But I just never gave up. I think that’s one of the biggest things that has gotten me here — when so many people would have walked away, I kept going. You can’t outwork someone who’s having fun, and you’ll never outwork me.

Connor Donahue Couture was built on high-end, fine leather goods. That has always been the origin of the business and will always be its backbone and heritage, with the spirit of travel, glamour, and craftsmanship at the forefront.
Today, our storefront features everything from leather cardholders and wallets to clutches, handbags, and purses, all of which are also available through our online store ConnorDonahueCouture.com. Over the years, the business naturally evolved into couture clothing and runway collections, which led to custom bridal and eventually to high-end tailoring and alterations for our clientele.
We also offer embroidery and monogramming, both on many of our own products and on pieces that customers bring to us.
What I’m most proud of is that we actually make so much of what we sell right here in Hingham. In an industry where so much production has moved overseas, I’m incredibly proud to be creating beautiful, high-quality products locally and keeping those skills and craftsmanship alive here. I think that’s a big part of what sets us apart — you’re not just buying a product or a service from us; you’re working directly with the people who are actually making it.
At the end of the day, I think our biggest distinction is that we combine old-world craftsmanship with a very modern, personal approach. Whether someone is having a pair of pants tailored, a wedding gown completely customized, or a handbag made, everything gets the same level of attention to detail.
How do you think about luck?
I believe luck is when preparation meets opportunity. I’ve always tried to be ready when an opportunity presents itself, but I also think there’s something to be said for having a very clear vision of where you want to go and then putting yourself in a position to make it happen. I’ve always had a pretty strong belief in what I’m capable of, even before there was evidence of it. I think that mindset has opened a lot of doors for me — because I was already ready to walk through them. I’m still always preparing for the next opportunity, because you never know when it’s going to come.
