Check Out Andrea Mott’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Mott.

Hi Andrea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Andrea, a wife and mom of three living in Metro Detroit. Since having kids, about 6 years ago, I have become more aware of the things we’ve brought into our home – I’ve switched many conventional products for non-toxic ones, I read ingredient labels, and I am as intentional as I know how to be about making healthier choices for our family. I thought I was doing all of the right things. However, about a month after our third child was born, he developed eczema – by that I don’t mean a little dry skin. He had full body inflammation, weeping, itchy eczema from head to toe. I have never seen anything like it. It has opened my eyes to so much more that we can be aware of. It also led us to realizing we have been living in toxic black mold. Navigating infant eczema, food allergies (which goes hand in hand with eczema), mold, etc. is very isolating, expensive and overwhelming. I started sharing our journey to a healthier home and family, and specifically the eczema piece, because when we were in the thick of it, I didn’t see really anyone else going through what we were. I wanted to provide a soft place for other eczema moms to land, and share hope and encouragement that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, because healing isn’t linear. In regard to eczema specifically, my son’s skin looks clear, but he still deals with itchiness, and has a multitude of food allergies/sensitivities that make everyday life more complicated. We can’t pack a quick snack or take him to a restaurant right now. Everything is cooked fresh for him. Not to mention, the cost of care, supplements, organic food, air purifiers, mold remediation, is astronomical.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Something I am really grateful for is the flexibility of my job. I’ve been a teacher for over 10 years – the first 5 I was in the classroom, and all other years have been online from home. Being home with my kiddos and having the ability to manage my son’s eczema, supplements, diet, etc. and not having to rely on other people to do that has been very helpful, and gives me the confidence to know I am doing all that I can be to help heal him.

Any big plans?
I am looking forward to complete healing of our family, our son and our home (removing all mold). I’ve been sharing our journey on Instagram at @ourunfoldinghome and would love to one day turn content creation and sharing our journey and encouraging other moms, into a full time job.
