Today we’d like to introduce you to Krithi Rachakonda.
Hi Krithi , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I noticed that people would stay for the same few item songs or fast beat film songs played over and over again, but the minute the songs had so much as classical tinges to it, people would leave. This was heartbreaking because South Indian classical music, called Carnatic Music, is such a beautiful thing. It is incredibly vast, which could have been one of the reasons why people didn’t connect to it. Although I myself have a ton to learn, I wanted to start this project so that people could understand that Carnatic music is the foundation of what they listen to. I want to make Carnatic music fun and easy so that in the next generations we don’t let this tradition die down and maybe, I can witness a full house at my Carnatic performance one day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I am a complete social media beginner and I had to power through even on days I got 200 views or even less sometimes. I would still keep going and my goal was that I would keep doing this for Carnatic music even if there was one person watching. It is also extremely hard to juggle all of these activities, like swimming, my extracurricular classes, my school classes, and an organization, but it’s taught me better time management.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Our organization, Project Nadamaya focuses on spreading Carnatic music. Nada means sound, and Maya means world in Sanskrit so our goal is to literally make a world of sound or in this case, music. The thing that separates us is that we don’t post covers of Carnatic songs, or just post theory videos. We try to incorporate Carnatic music into any given song so that viewers understand that Carnatic music is the basis for almost all South Indian music.

We usually have singers, instrumentalists, or other artists collaborate on posts with us and we are currently working on getting an expert to teach in one our workshops!
