Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley S. Hattle.
Hi Ashley , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Writing has always been my calling. I was a staff writer for many years, then a senior editor, and have two published books—one of which won two awards. In 2024, I made a career change from marketing and journalism to the literary world of fiction and nonfiction as an established writer and editor. As part of my due diligence for my clients and work, I’m completing the Editing Certificate program at the University of Chicago. I write and edit in many areas, including medical, legal, academic, nonfiction, and fiction, using the appropriate styles (AP, CMOS, APA, etc.).
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I thought trading my AP Stylebook for the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) would feel tedious, and at times it did (looking at you, indexing chapter), but it’s been reinvigorating. Networking with my peers and going through the CMOS courses have reignited my love for writing and editing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m best known for my self-help textbook on cluster headaches. Writing that book, with the help of an amazing editor, gave me the tools I needed to thrive in medical marketing, grant writing, and academic writing and editing. I enjoy translating complicated medical jargon into layperson terms that patients can understand.
My editing work with writers and authors brings me joy in other ways. I love diving into a story and making it stronger with the author. We often spend hours staring at our own words, and an outside perspective from someone else in the industry gives the author and the manuscript a much-needed push to go from “good” to “great.”
What matters most to you? Why?
My family and career goals give me a great sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. Following my dreams—and making money doing it—is the best example I can give my children as they grow up.
No one needs to give up their fire to make it through life. The flames are what keep us going.
