Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Hoyle.
Hi Jack, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I first fell in love with photography in my early teens after picking up my mum’s old Pentax film camera. It didn’t take long before it became an obsession. I spent hours poring over photography books and the work of photographers like Robert Capa, Martin Parr and Henri Cartier-Bresson, especially the incredible Magnum collections. Their ability to tell honest, human stories through a single frame completely changed the way I saw photography.
I went on to study in Edinburgh, and after graduating in 2008, I spent several years teaching and travelling abroad. Wherever I went, my camera came with me. I was far more interested in documenting the people I met and the everyday moments I stumbled across than creating perfect pictures. Those years shaped the documentary approach that still defines my work today.
In 2013, I moved to London and launched Jack Hoyle Photography. The business grew quickly, and I was fortunate to photograph weddings all over the UK. Then, in 2015, my life took another exciting turn. I packed up everything, married my wonderful wife Grace, and moved across the Atlantic to Manchester, Michigan.
Starting over in a new country meant rebuilding my business from the ground up, but it also gave me the opportunity to create the kind of photography business I’d always imagined. Today, I photograph weddings and elopements throughout Michigan, across the United States, and around the world. While the locations have changed, my philosophy hasn’t. I’m still chasing the same thing I was with that old Pentax camera all those years ago: honest, meaningful photographs that tell the story of people exactly as they are.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Like most creative businesses, it’s been a lot of trial, error, and learning on the job.
When I first started photographing weddings, I was figuring out the rhythm of the day as much as the camera itself. Weddings move fast, and one of the biggest skills I’ve developed over the years is learning to anticipate moments before they happen rather than simply reacting to them. That’s something that only comes with experience.
I also charged peanuts in those early days! Looking back, those weddings were invaluable because every single one taught me something new. Photography, like any craft, rewards repetition. The idea that it takes around 10,000 hours to master something isn’t far off—you simply get better the more you do it. Every wedding has made me a stronger photographer.
I’ve never stopped being a student, either. I still spend time studying artists, not just within the wedding industry but across documentary photography, fine art, cinema, painting, and photojournalism. Some of my biggest influences have nothing to do with weddings at all, and I think that’s helped me develop a style that feels authentic rather than following trends.
Of course, taking good photographs is only half the job. Learning how to run a business, market yourself, build a reputation, manage finances, and create an experience that people want to recommend has been just as important. Building a client base from scratch—twice, once in the UK and again after moving to the U.S.—was challenging, but it also taught me resilience. Looking back, every struggle has ultimately made both me and the business stronger.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I photograph weddings and elopements with a blend of documentary and fine art photography. For me, it’s about striking the balance between honest storytelling and beautiful, thoughtful composition. I want my images to feel natural and emotionally real, while also being photographs you’d genuinely want to hang on your wall.
Rather than trying to fit every wedding into the same formula, I believe each celebration has its own personality. Every couple is different, every family dynamic is different, and every venue offers something unique. I go into every wedding with an open mind rather than a shot list in my head, and I come away with a collection of photographs that couldn’t belong to anyone else’s day.
I think that’s what sets me apart. My approach isn’t cookie-cutter or trend-driven. I’m not interested in recreating the same photos over and over because they performed well on Instagram. Instead, I’m constantly looking for the moments, relationships, light, and atmosphere that make each wedding completely unique. The result is a gallery that reflects the couple and their story—not a formula.
I’m also a firm believer that inspiration shouldn’t stop at the wedding industry. I continue to study documentary photographers, photojournalists, filmmakers, painters, and artists whose work has nothing to do with weddings. Those influences continually shape the way I see light, emotion, and storytelling, and they help keep my work evolving.
What I’m most proud of is that I’ve been able to build a full-time career doing something I genuinely love. Even more than that, I’m incredibly grateful that so much of my work comes through word of mouth. There’s no bigger compliment than a couple trusting me with one of the most important days of their lives and then recommending me to their friends and family. To me, that’s the greatest measure of success.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’m not sure!
