Rising Stars: Meet Amber Kirby of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Kirby.

Hi Amber, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve had a love for Art my whole life starting in second grade. I won an art contest to have my artwork featured in a school calendar for all of the district. My next award would come when I was 16 years old and in high school. After that, I have pursued a love for private design in the arts my whole life. I started out doing body piercings for extra cash figured out that I was really good at it and started doing it professionally shortly there after I started doing tattoos as well that turned into a 2020 five-year career. When I graduated high school I’ve moved from Michigan to Florida to meet my dad was down there for several years. Just came back in 2022 to Michigan to be close to family and brought my kids up here so they could get to know everyone. Tattooing around here is not for the faint of heart because the customers are rude and there’s no respect artist are treated like shit and most people around here are producing shit work. I currently am not tattooing. I do at home healthcare in the city of Lansing and I performed monster drag for my expression of Art. I’m not doing great barely surviving and it’s very different from when I was in the prime and my career.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all… Some of the challenges I’ve experienced our discrimination, abuse, homelessness, and I’ve been used a lot

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Most people know me for my professionalism within the Art community. I treat my clients with respect and that’s kind of unheard of the tattoo industry these days. I specialize in a very personal tattoo experience. I make sure that they are comfortable and that they have everything they need to feel safe and that the tattoo is exactly what they want.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about the city is all the resources and support this available. What I like, least about the city is the roughness and the fact that it’s not entirely safe.
