Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Johnson.
Hi Andrea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a visually impaired artist I decided to do my ancestry research after getting my DNA results back I found out I was the relative of Harriet Tubman I decided to use my talents as an artist to teach others how to be self-sufficient and independent financially by giving free art classes and design lessons
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I was born partially blind in one eye it has been an extreme obstacle that I have had to overcome. I decided to become an entrepreneur because I received a lot of discrimination due to my visual impairment and the use of computer screens which I was unable to see properly. Unfortunately many companies don’t see the need to hire visually impaired people but I will say that I’ve had pleasant experiences at some corporations that I work for such as PF Chang’s Las Vegas location but it just wasn’t enough for me so I decided to fight a little harder and start from the ground up with my business venture. It also taught me the need disabled people to reach back out to other disabled people or disenfranchised individuals that need job training and resources located inside the city of Detroit Michigan
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I run an NGO which is the Harriet Tubman community social services will be provide health and human services as well as art classes and business startup
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
NGO which is a non-governmental organization that provides services to the citizens and is more popular than ever due to the rapid case of frauds and nonprofit organizations having a privately fund non-governmental organization that works towards helping the people is essential for the future and I believe more people will take the same path
