Community Highlights: Meet Dave Dubay of Golden Key Realty Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Dubay.

Hi Dave, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first obtained a Real Estate license in 1995 and worked for almost 2 years and realized at the time it was not for me. I went on to other things and eventually got into IT and did that for 20 years. I was living in Florida and was going to be moving back to Michigan. So I figured, I might as well get my license reinstated. I thought of the Real Estate reality shows and said “Those idiots are doing it, I’m an idiot I can do that too.” So I got my license and was working a full time job and just hated it and decided to quit and go into Real Estate full time. I am glad I did as it opened up the field to me and I haven’t looked back. I started out on a large area team and was there for about 4 years and felt I needed a change. I looked at some different Brokerages and decided that the Golden Key Group was a good fit for me. I have been hear for a little over 3 years now.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At first, it was hard to get established and get the business. Fortunately, as I was on a team I was able to get into a lead system and with my phone skills I was starting to gain traction and then COVID came and blew up the industry. After that it seemed like I was starting over again. Except this time I had the skills and experience so it did not take long before I was off and running again.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Golden Key Realty Group?
I came to Golden Key Group a little over 3 years ago because I liked the model and the Brokers running the place. I was able to transfer what I had learned and apply it to this new environment. When I got here there were maybe 25 agents and one office in Troy. I have been able to watch as we have grown to over 100 agent and now have added additional offices in Novi and Davison. I work mainly in residential real estate on the buy and sell side. I am really proud of our office environment and the diverse range of agents we have. I set myself apart from other agents by not being like other agents. When I see a large portion of agents doing one thing, I do the opposite. I also do not rely on being fed leads. I am on the phone working my sphere, cold calling, expired and FSBOs, something many agents are afraid to do. I have a bit of an advantage having worked in IT for 20 years. In that field I learned how to communicate effectively to people and speak and explain things to them in plain simple to understand terms. I do that with my buyers and sellers now so they can easily understand the process of buying and selling a home. I feel I am never selling anything, I am helping people with decisions in their life and making sure that they are represented to the fullest and will never have any regrets about the process. When I am working with clients, I am overly honest and very blunt about the condition of a home or about their expectations. No one cares more about my clients and their money than I will and thats why they trust me.

What matters most to you? Why?
Honesty matters the most to me. I do not lie to my clients or anyone else I am involved in a transaction with. Once I find out a client or another agent has lied to me, it is very hard to continue in a relationship with them. We are working together to get to the finish line and not being honest can certainly hamper that result.
