Meet Jinbi Park of New York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jinbi Park.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up by the sea in Busan, South Korea, where the rhythm of the waves was part of everyday life. The ocean has always been a constant presence — vast, alive, and full of mystery. Later, living in Japan, another island country surrounded by water, deepened that connection. The sea was never far away, and it continued to shape how I see the world.

When I began scuba diving, the relationship became even more intimate. Beneath the surface, I discovered intricate coral structures, the quiet movement of marine life, and the ever-changing dance of light underwater. These experiences stirred something in me — a deep respect for the fragile beauty of the ocean and an endless curiosity for its forms and colors.

My jewelry grows out of these moments. Each piece I create draws on the textures, patterns, and emotions I encounter underwater — transformed through imagination into contemporary designs. Scuba diving reminds me to slow down, to observe closely, and to find harmony in natural shapes.

For me, creating jewelry is another way of diving: exploring the unseen, translating feeling into form, and sharing a small reflection of the ocean’s endless inspiration.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges I faced was finding my own voice within the concept I envisioned for my work. It took time to move beyond simply applying the techniques I had learned and transform them into a personal language of expression. Developing a distinct artistic identity required experimentation, persistence, and the confidence to trust my own creative instincts until my work truly reflected my perspective.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create contemporary jewelry inspired by the ocean and the intricate organic structures of coral reefs. Growing up by the sea and spending time scuba diving, I have developed a deep appreciation for the underwater world, which serves as the foundation of my artistic practice.

Witnessing the beauty of coral reefs firsthand has also made me aware of their fragility. As climate change, pollution, and overfishing continue to threaten reef ecosystems around the world, I feel a responsibility to preserve their beauty through my work. My jewelry transforms reef-like forms into wearable art, allowing people to experience and appreciate these extraordinary natural structures—even those who may never have the opportunity to see a living coral reef.

Sustainability is central to my practice. I use recycled precious metals and ethically sourced, responsibly mined gemstones because I believe the materials I work with should reflect the values behind the work itself. My goal is to celebrate the natural world without contributing to its depletion.

What I am most proud of is creating a body of work that combines meticulous craftsmanship with environmental storytelling. Each piece is hand fabricated using traditional goldsmithing techniques, yet reinterprets nature through my own artistic language. By merging technical precision with organic forms, I hope to foster a deeper appreciation for the oceans and inspire others to recognize both their beauty and the importance of protecting them.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I hope to introduce more people to the field of contemporary and art jewelry. While many people are familiar with jewelry as adornment or luxury, contemporary jewelry uses the medium as a form of artistic expression, often exploring ideas, materials, identity, culture, and our relationship with the world around us. Through my work, I want to help readers better understand the history, philosophy, and significance of contemporary jewelry, and to encourage a deeper appreciation for it as an art form.
