Rising Stars: Meet DuWanna Coleman of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to DuWanna Coleman.

Hi DuWanna , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been anything but traditional. I’m a mother, aviation leader, author, and creative who has learned that becoming isn’t a destination it’s a lifelong process.

For years, I poured my thoughts into journals, never imagining those private pages would one day become my memoir, In the Middle of Becoming. Writing the book wasn’t just about telling my story it was about choosing healing, accountability, and authenticity over perfection.

Professionally, I’ve built a career in aviation leadership while navigating major life transitions, including relocating, rebuilding, and rediscovering who I am outside of the roles I once defined myself by. Personally, I’ve learned that growth often requires letting go of who you were to make room for who you’re becoming.

Today, my mission extends beyond my career. Through my writing, speaking, and creative projects, I hope to create spaces where people feel seen, understood, and encouraged to embrace their own journey. If my story has taught me anything, it’s that our greatest breakthroughs are often born in the middle of becoming.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but looking back, I wouldn’t change the lessons that came with the challenges.

Like many people, I’ve experienced seasons of heartbreak, uncertainty, and having to rebuild parts of my life I never imagined would fall apart. I’ve navigated difficult relationships, career transitions, health challenges, relocation, and the internal battle of rediscovering who I was after spending so much of my life pouring into everyone else.

One of my biggest obstacles was learning that healing isn’t just about moving on it’s about being honest with yourself. I had to let go of the pressure to have everything figured out and embrace the reality that growth is often messy.

Publishing In the Middle of Becoming was one of the most vulnerable things I’ve ever done. Sharing pieces of my story meant accepting that not everyone would understand or agree with my perspective, but I realized that authenticity is more valuable than approval.

Every challenge has shaped the woman I am today. They’ve taught me resilience, compassion, and the courage to keep becoming, even when the path ahead isn’t clear.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently serve as a Station Manager in the aviation industry, leading teams in an environment where safety, efficiency, and people all matter equally. Every day presents a new challenge, and I’ve learned that great leadership isn’t just about making decisions it’s about building trust, developing people, and creating a culture where everyone feels valued.

While aviation is my profession, storytelling is my passion. I’m the author of In the Middle of Becoming, a memoir born from years of journaling, healing, and learning to embrace every version of myself. Writing gave me a voice beyond the workplace and allowed me to connect with people on a much deeper level.

I’m most proud of the impact I’ve had on others. Whether I’m mentoring a team member, encouraging someone through my writing, or simply sharing my own experiences, I hope people walk away believing that growth is possible and that no season of life is wasted.

What sets me apart is that I don’t separate who I am from what I do. The same compassion, resilience, and authenticity that guide me as a leader also shape me as an author and creator. My career has taught me how to lead people, and my life has taught me how to understand them. I believe both are equally important, and together they’ve become the foundation of everything I’m building.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing that surprises people is that I never set out to become an author. Long before there was a book, there were journals years of handwritten thoughts, prayers, questions, and reflections that no one else was ever supposed to read.

Writing has always been how I process life. It’s where I celebrate, grieve, heal, and challenge myself. In the Middle of Becoming wasn’t created because I wanted to write a book; it happened because my journals eventually became too meaningful to keep to myself.

People often see the leader, the author, or the person encouraging others, but what they don’t always see is that I’m still doing the work too. I’m still learning, still growing, and still becoming. I don’t believe growth has an expiration date, and I hope people see that it’s okay to evolve at every stage of life.
