Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Sablich.
Hi Jane, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have a degree in zoology from Northern Michigan University. I used that to gain work experience at different zoos around the country. During that time I had always joked that I wanted to open a “zoo-wery”, a brewery where I could combine my love for craft beer with my passion for conserving the natural world. That always felt like a very distant dream until we moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. I was working for a environmental education camp when I saw the Taproom Manager position at Speciation open up. After giving it a lot of thought and talking it out friends, I decided to just go for it and try something new. The brewery already had some nature/science vibes, and I was only adding more to it. With the help of the whole team, we continued carving our space in the community in authentic ways. We started hosting regular nature nights, showing live animal cams on the TV, and so many amazing community partners were hosting events in our space. Learning that the brewery was for sale and that I could possibly step into ownership was exciting. It felt like the perfect opportunity to make my dreams become a reality- especially because my husband and family were cheering me on the entire way. Buying the brewery was a natural next step for me and for Speciation Cellars. It felt kind of cosmic and meant to be.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I feel like most good things in life come with a bit of struggle, haha! My career background and experience are very different than the industry I currently exist in. Not only did I have a lot to learn when it came to beer, I also struggled with impostor syndrome. It took me a while to confidently lead our team and find the resources I needed to be successful. I am grateful to my previous boss, who has given me a lot of mentorship along the way and my coworkers for always being patient and supportive. My husband agreed to support my crazy dreams and helped me when I needed it. All of the sudden we were doing it! Giving myself a lot of grace and just putting in the work has really paid off. It’s also made me confident that if anyone can do it, I can probably do it!
As you know, we’re big fans of Speciation Cellars. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We, Speciation Cellars, are a brewery tucked off an alley in the Uptown neighborhood of Grand Rapids, MI. We are lovers of nature, art, yummy drinks, music, and community. When the Ermatingers first opened the brewery, we specialized in sour and wild ales, which we do continue to do. But we also want people to know we have so much more than that – traditional style beers, cider, seltzers, wines, and lots of nonalcoholic options. When someone is craving something fun or unique to drink, they often think of us. Our community is what makes us cool with the constant events held at the brewery! We think of ourselves as a third space where everyone can truly be who they are. Our bartenders are some of the most caring people in town, and will be sure to take care of you when you stop by. If you haven’t been in yet, we have something for everyone. Whether it’s a live music show on Friday, trivia on Wednesdays, or any of our regular community weekend events. Follow our event calendar on the website or on our social medias to stay up-to-date!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I have always said that I love to host. But I guess I mean by that is I love to take care of my people both at home and at work. As a past educator and current bartender/bar owner, I love making people feel seen and cared for. This quality has helped build real authentic relationships with our regulars, staff, neighbors, and other business friends. It feels odd to say because it can also be so personally rewarding, but I can’t deny that it feels like a core part of my success Speciation.
