Today we’d like to introduce you to Lavelle Williams.
Hi Lavelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born to 2 artists that never got to explore their talents. My dad was a singer and could draw. My mom, a poet.
Ive been creating since I could remember. Drawing, singing, writing, building, designing.
At 11 I began writing poetry just to organize the thoughts I couldn’t articulate.
At 13 I really started getting into music of every genre. At one point I had a laptop specifically for music that had 25 Gb just of songs.
At 15 I wrote my first song, an alt rock sadboi ballad, and from there, in my head, I was a musician. I didnt have any instruments so I just wrote songs for a band I didnt have.
At 19 I wrote my first rap song a breakup song to the beat of J Coles “Lights Please”. I got a really good response from those that heard it and I knew i was doing something right.
At this point I still hadn’t actually recorded anything and I didnt until almost 6 years later.
I got into a duo with a friend was in the local scene. We made 10 songs before I knew it was time to move on.
In 2019 I recorded my 1st mixtape, Pauper Prince King, and since then I’ve been working to perfect my craft solo.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Really ive only ever ran into one obstacle, my need to be myself.
I dont see this as a problem but realized no one supports something they cant explain and by every metric, im different.
Non categorical. Unique. Original.
At least i try to be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Ive worked jobs all over. Retail, janitorial, childcare, kitchen, landscaping, bartending, djing, gig work, warehouse, factory, and more.
At the moment im doing security for a few local venues. I like it, but who knows whats in store.
I really want to get into water/hardscaping. Its a mix of engineering and nature that has an artistic feel to it.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The best and worst thing about this city is that everyone knows everyone. Whether tangentially or directly the city is very close knit.
