Life & Work with Justin Rivard of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Rivard.

Hi Justin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a serial hobbyist and got into professional brewing in 2011. During my undergraduate at Albion college, I studied neuroscience and history, but also really enjoyed ecology and studying the environment. Growing up in Traverse City, I have always been fascinated by the natural world and wanting to protect it. I like making beers and ciders with foraged, native and local ingredients. It’s been a life long dream to open a brewery, and I finally did it! I also have a distillery license which allows me the ability to experiment with cocktails and liquors as well. I really look forward to building community through conservation efforts and hosting local artists and musicians in our front of house space and beer garden. Our front of house space is shared with a coffee shop and separate kitchen, which has attracted even more people and has created some fun collaborations- think food and beer pairings and a few coffee beers. I look forward to how the space will continue to evolve!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Capital for the brewery has been a momentous challenge. About 50 doors closed before one opened. The hours are long and I’m glad I’m fairly handy when it comes to construction. Navigating the legal system regarding alcohol and compliance is complicated too. As a single active owner, my time is often split a million different ways. It’s so helpful to have friends willing to lend a hand and keep me going!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I think what sets us apart is dedication to quality ingredients (many beers are 90% or more made in Michigan), and supporting my staff as best I can so they can do what they do best (making high end drinks and chatting with the customers). The brewery space has a lovely “Japandi” aesthetic. We cut no corners when it came to building the bar either so I feel the customer experience and ambience is solid.

In regards to brewing style, I like to take classic styles and add a culinary edge or a creative spin, without going overboard (no trendy “kitchen sink” beers in my repertoire) I do this by having strict attention to detail, stringent cleaning practices and years of experience and careful notes. I also try to have a beer for everyone. I am a nuanced brewer- the flavor should come across, but not hit you over the head, and drinkability is key.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was natural curious and I love to learn and read. I am definitely an outdoorsman and love hiking, mountain biking and being on the water. I love chatting with folks but an definitely one of those “extroverted introverts”. I think many people describe me as kind and hospitable.
