Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanelle Johnson.
Hi Shanelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I discovered my love for hair in middle school while styling my best friend’s hair. From that point on, I was constantly doing my own hair and styling family and friends throughout high school. Even then, I knew creating beautiful, healthy hair was something that came naturally to me.
After high school, I enrolled in college, but I quickly realized my heart wasn’t in it. When I saw an advertisement for Paul Mitchell, I knew it was the opportunity I’d been waiting for. I enrolled in cosmetology school while working full-time on the midnight shift at Chrysler and raising my son as a full-time mom.
It was one of the hardest seasons of my life. There were days when I would get off work in the morning, sleep in my car in the school parking lot, then attend classes all day. None of it would have been possible without my grandmother, who lovingly cared for my son while I worked toward my dream. Eventually, I realized I couldn’t give 100% to both Chrysler and cosmetology school, so I made the difficult decision to leave the security of my job and bet on myself.
That leap of faith changed my life.
I earned my cosmetology license and began my career by assisting in salons and working alongside a freelance hairstylist, learning as much as I could. Since becoming licensed in 2022, I’ve continued to grow my skills, build my clientele, and establish myself as a healthy hair and color specialist. Today, I’m proud to be the owner of my own salon suite, where I help women feel confident through luxury hair care while continuing to build the business and legacy I’ve always envisioned.
For me, hair has never been just about beauty—it’s about transformation, confidence, and creating a space where people feel seen, heard, and cared for. My journey has been built on faith, perseverance, and the willingness to take risks in pursuit of my purpose, and I’m excited to see where that journey leads next.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every obstacle has shaped the business owner and woman I am today.
While I was in cosmetology school, I was working full-time at Chrysler. When my schedule was unexpectedly changed from the midnight shift to the afternoon shift, it conflicted with my school hours and delayed my graduation. I had to make one of the biggest decisions of my life—to walk away from a stable job and fully invest in my dream of becoming a hairstylist.
Not long after, I was involved in a car accident that left me without reliable transportation. At the time, I was assisting another hairstylist, and I was determined not to give up. Thankfully, the freelance stylist I worked with lived nearby and generously picked me up every day so I could continue learning, working, and earning an income. That experience reminded me how important community and genuine support can be.
One of the biggest challenges people don’t know about is that, in the beginning of my career, my son and I experienced homelessness. We stayed with family members, slept on couches, stayed in hotels when we could afford them, and there were even nights when we slept in my car. I was trying to build a career while raising a young child and simply doing everything I could to create a better future for us.
Entrepreneurship can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also lonely, unpredictable, and full of sacrifices—especially as a single mother. There were many moments when giving up would’ve been easier, but I refused to let my circumstances define my future.
Today, when I unlock the door to my own salon suite, I’m reminded that every late night, every setback, every tear, and every sacrifice was worth it. Those experiences didn’t break me—they built me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Radiant Tresses Luxury Hair Studio, I specialize in healthy hair care, textured hair, luxury color services, extensions, and customized treatments that prioritize the integrity of my clients’ hair. My goal is to help every client feel confident while educating them on how to maintain healthy hair long after they leave my chair.
What sets me apart is the experience I create. I believe hair appointments should feel like self-care, so I’ve built a space where women feel relaxed, heard, and genuinely cared for—not just styled.
One of my proudest accomplishments is building my business from the ground up and opening my own salon suite. Every client who trusts me with their hair reminds me why I took the leap to become an entrepreneur.
Looking ahead, my vision extends beyond the salon. I plan to grow Radiant Tresses into a nationally recognized beauty brand through education, luxury hair care products, mentorship, and community outreach. My goal is to leave a legacy that empowers women to feel radiant from the inside out.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is helping people rebuild their confidence. There’s nothing like seeing someone’s face light up when they look in the mirror after their service. Whether it’s a woman or one of my male clients, knowing I’ve helped someone feel more confident and beautiful inside and out is what makes this career so fulfilling. Hair is more than a service—it’s confidence, and I’m grateful to be part of that transformation.
