Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenea Markham.
Hi Jenea, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m the Marketing and Brand Specialist for Downtown Lansing Inc., where I lead marketing initiatives that celebrate the businesses, events, and people that make downtown a vibrant destination. My career has been rooted in supporting small businesses, beginning with several years in retail media, where I developed marketing strategies and created content to help independent retailers grow and connect with their communities.
Before joining Downtown Lansing Inc., I served as Social Media Manager for the Old Town Commercial Association, promoting one of Lansing’s most distinctive neighborhoods through storytelling, events, and community engagement. I’m passionate about uplifting small businesses, strengthening local economies, and showcasing the unique character of neighborhoods through thoughtful marketing and creative placemaking.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The world of digital marketing is never smooth, as best practices change weekly as technology moves forward. But It’s crucial to keep as up to date as possible while also keeping a finger on the pulse of what people really want to see and engage with.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As the Marketing and Brand Specialist for Downtown Lansing Inc., I develop campaigns, events, and content that highlight the people, businesses, and experiences that make Downtown Lansing a vibrant destination. I love creating work that strengthens the community. I believe the best marketing isn’t just about attracting attention—it’s about building connections and inspiring people to support the places that make their city special. My goal is always for people to feel connected to our neighborhood and the people who live and work here.
I try to approach every project with authenticity and a community-first mindset, always looking for ways to elevate the people and organizations that make our downtowns unique.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Look to people whose work you admire and connect with them.
