Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Marcum.
Hi Misty, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Luna Moon was never about creating the perfect yoga class.
It’s about creating moments that people carry home with them.
Some people discover confidence they didn’t know they had. Some reconnect with nature after years of feeling disconnected. Others simply find a community where they can show up exactly as they are. The paddleboard just happens to be the place where it all begins.
Years ago, I discovered paddleboarding and immediately felt something shift. The water had a way of slowing everything down. It didn’t matter what was happening on land—once I stepped onto a board, everything became a little quieter. It was challenging, peaceful, playful, and freeing all at once.
Like many entrepreneurs, my first thought was, “I want to share this.”
So I did what most people do. I earned certifications, studied, practiced, researched, and learned how to safely teach others. Those credentials gave me the knowledge to build classes, but they didn’t become the heart of Luna Moon.
It’s discovering you’re capable of more than you imagined.
Luna Moon has grown into something I never expected. Yes, we teach SUP yoga. But more importantly, we’ve built a community of people who encourage one another, celebrate each other’s wins, and remind each other to slow down and experience life a little differently.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—but honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way because every challenge shaped what Luna Moon has become.
Like many small business owners, I’ve experienced the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. Michigan’s weather creates a short paddle season, there are constant decisions to make, and behind every class is a long list of things people never see—planning, marketing, equipment, permits, insurance, websites, social media, and all the little details that keep a business moving.
Instead of focusing on building bigger classes, I focused on building stronger relationships. Instead of asking, “How do I get more customers?” I started asking, “How do I create a place where people truly belong?”
Ironically, that’s when the business started to feel more authentic.
One of the hardest personal moments was losing my husky, Luna, who inspired the name Luna Moon. She wasn’t just my dog—she was my adventure buddy, my paddle companion, and a huge part of the heart behind this business. Losing her reminded me how precious our time is and reinforced why I want Luna Moon to be about creating meaningful experiences and memories, not just checking another workout off a list.
Every challenge has pushed me back to the same purpose: creating a community where people feel connected—to nature, to each other, and to themselves.
Looking back, I don’t see the struggles as setbacks anymore. They were the moments that helped me discover what Luna Moon was really meant to be.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Luna Moon is an outdoor wellness and adventure community built around one simple belief: the water has an incredible way of bringing people together.
While many people know us for stand-up paddleboard (SUP) yoga, that’s really just the beginning. I offer beginner paddleboard lessons, SUP yoga, aqua fitness, private coaching, destination paddles, retreats in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Florida, and personalized experiences designed to help people build confidence and discover the joy of being on the water.
What sets Luna Moon apart isn’t just what we do—it’s how people feel while they’re doing it.
I want someone to leave saying, “I didn’t know I could do that.”
Whether that’s standing on a paddleboard for the first time, trying aqua fitness, gliding across the water on an eFoil, joining a retreat, or discovering a hidden shoreline they’ve never explored, those moments of confidence and joy are what inspire me.
At the end of the day, I’m not just teaching people how to paddle.
I’m creating opportunities for people to reconnect with nature, discover their courage, build lasting friendships, and continue saying “yes” to new adventures—one paddle stroke at a time.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’m excited for what’s ahead. Luna Moon is always evolving, and I’m constantly dreaming up new ways to help people experience the water. From new adventures and wellness experiences to expanding retreats and introducing new ways to explore, my goal is to keep creating moments that bring people together. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the best adventures often begin with simply saying “yes.”
