Meet Grey Sky of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grey Sky.

Hi Grey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a DJ, songwriter, singer, and rapper from Grand Rapids Michigan. My obsession with music began when I was very young. I remember holding the radio to my ear while falling asleep. I would listen to records for hours on end as well. One memory I have is playing random notes and made-up chords on my family’s piano – I dubbed it “Angel Music”. I have experience singing in church and school choirs. In 2014 I started making experimental beats on Fruity Loops, a music production program. I got real serious about music when I met my producer friend Flowers for an Early Grave in 2019. We meshed immediately and started making songs. That’s about the same time I met my frequent collaborator Antholo-G (known at that time as Ghetto Gov). I started DJing during Covid in 2021 and have played several festivals and many shows since then. I host events at Mulligan’s Pub in Grand Rapids.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most difficult obstacle I work on overcoming daily is any limiting belief and imposter syndrome. I remind myself on a regular basis that I am who I say I am and can do anything I put my mind and effort toward. I invest in myself and on my darkest days I strive to find some light. A practice of being grateful helps me to remember all I have and all I am.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My focus is to provide an atmosphere that is conducive to the environment. For instance, I was hired to DJ a Second Chance Prom at Ferris State University. So I had dance music ready to play. The attendees had some requests that I was able to get to – so they had a great night dancing. If it’s a showcase event I spotlight the artists to give them proper acknowledgment and attention. Each event is different so I come prepared and ready to work. No matter the genre – I bring passion and understanding to execute an entertaining event.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success by how much fun I’m having. I also ask if the other artists involved are enjoying the experience. Is the event furthering the goal of connecting community and showcasing talent? Sometimes success is just answering yes to the question, “Is it a vibe?” It can be as simple or complex as that. For future events I’m concentrating on building community and bringing attention to up and coming artists.
