Daily Inspiration: Meet Dr. Felicia Moses, PhD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Felicia Moses, PhD.

Hi Dr. Felicia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My career has been a journey of growth, resilience, perseverance, and purpose. I began my professional career in banking, first with Manufacturers Bank, now known as J.P. Morgan Chase, where I spent 10 years developing strong client relationships and gaining valuable professional experience.

In 1997, I accepted a position with the United States District Court, where I served for 21 years in various roles. Working within the federal court system gave me a deep appreciation for justice, integrity, and helping people navigate some of the most challenging moments of their lives. This is where my advocacy work and my strong ethic identity were birthed.

Although I enjoyed my career, I always felt a calling to help people in a more personal and meaningful way. A few years of work experience later, that deeper purpose led me to finish my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Wayne State University in 2015. That degree proved to be an important turning point that enabled me to take the leap and fully pursue a new path in mental health counseling. That passion led me to return to school in 2018 to pursue a new path in mental health counseling. In 2021, I graduated from Central Michigan University with a 3.98 GPA, earning a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and later earning a Doctorate in Religious Philosophy in Christian Counseling in 2025.

Looking back, every chapter of my career has prepared me for the work I do today. My experiences in banking, the federal court system, and higher education, along with strong advocacy work, have shaped me as a person and my perspective and strengthened my commitment to serving others with compassion, professionalism, and empathy. Today, I feel incredibly grateful to be living out my purpose as a Clinical Mental Health Therapist/Christian Counselor, and I will be adding “Chaplain” to my title to further help individuals discover healing, resilience, restoration, and hope.

As a former podcaster on the Brushstrokes Show for 5 years, an author, an empowerment strategist life coach, and so much more, I advocate for people who can’t advocate for themselves. As a current Director of Human Resources and the Sergeant-at-Arms with the Elite Women Organization, I help run the organization alongside my President and the membership of phenomenal women that you will ever meet. From fighting on the Capitol steps in Lansing, MI, to speaking in churches, schools and other platforms about mental health, my life from the start was destined for greatness. After graduation, I was fortunate to acquire
valuable and diverse clinical experience working in Community Mental Health and with other clinicians in a private practice setting. With those foundational experiences, I successfully launched my own practice, Counseling Your Heart, LLC, as a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor. Today, while actively serving my clients, I am also studying for the National Counselor Examination (NCE) to continue to elevate my professional practice.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many people, I have not had a journey without its challenges. Transitioning from a long and successful career with the United States District Court to becoming a full-time student and pursuing an entirely new profession was both exciting and intimidating. Returning to graduate school after many years in the workforce required a great deal of discipline, perseverance, and faith, especially after losing my job with the court system. Starting over was a challenge, balancing the needs of intense academic work and a major career change with raising my daughter through her teenage years and into early adulthood. It was a struggle to find who I was in the next chapter of my life, but knowing I had a strong support system helped me balance my roles as wife and mother.

Building a career as a Clinical Mental Health Therapist also came with its own challenges. Establishing myself in a new profession, earning licensure, and building trust within the community took patience and persistence. There were moments of uncertainty, but each obstacle reinforced why I chose this path in the first place.

Looking back, I realize that every challenge became an opportunity for growth. Those experiences strengthened my resilience, deepened my compassion for others, and affirmed my calling to help individuals navigate their own life transitions and healing journeys. Today, I can honestly say that the struggles were worth it because they have made me into the woman I have become. By God’s grace and mercy, I am still STANDING! Today, my experience has opened doors and my name is being spoken in rooms.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a Clinical Mental Health Therapist, I am passionate about helping individuals navigate life’s challenges with compassion, understanding, and evidence-based care. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, life transitions, relationship concerns, and other emotional and mental health challenges. My approach is client-centered, meeting each person where they are and creating a safe, supportive environment where they feel heard, valued, and empowered to grow.

One of the things that set me apart is the unique path that led me to this profession. My experiences in banking, the United States District Court, and higher education have given me a broad perspective on people and the many challenges they face. Those experiences, combined with my clinical training and my Doctorate in Religious Philosophy in Christian Counseling, allow me to support clients from a holistic perspective. For those who desire it, I can thoughtfully integrate faith into the counseling process while always respecting each client’s individual beliefs and goals.

I am most proud of having the courage to follow my calling. Many will say that when I speak, I sound like a preacher. Oh no, I am not a preacher or a teacher, but a reacher – to reach those that need to be heard and validated and to build their authentic life because I know what it’s like to be invalidated and mischaracterized. Being part of that journey is both a privilege and a responsibility that I never take for granted.

Ultimately, I want every person who walks through my door to know they are not alone. My goal is to provide a space where healing, resilience, and personal growth can flourish, and where every client feels seen, respected, and supported.

I’m known for my bold, unapologetic approach to helping women break through barriers and invest in their own personal growth. Alongside my work as a clinician, I am also developing a book project that helps women embrace the full realization of their value and the great worth they add to their relationships and their lives.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I have always been naturally curious, compassionate, and drawn to helping others from a young age. As the oldest sibling to my brothers and a set of twins, responsibility and leadership came to me early on. I was raised in a traditional Church of God in Christ (COGIC) family, where faith played a central role in my upbringing, and where I played the piano and clarinet.

My biological father, now deceased, was a minister and military veteran, attended law school (did not graduate), and was a talented musician. Looking back, I can see how many of his qualities—his dedication to service, love of learning, and commitment to helping others—have been reflected in my own life and career.

Because of my strong spiritual foundation, I learned at an early age the value of listening. To date, many of my friends and family have often come to me to share their struggles or simply to have someone who would truly listen. I didn’t realize it at the time, but those conversations were preparing me for the work I would eventually do as a therapist.

I have always believed that hard work creates opportunities. My parents instilled many qualities and principles that have guided every chapter of my life and led me to where I am.

I am a woman of many talents and wear many hats. As an alumnus of Central Michigan University, I have been able to use these leadership skills beyond the counseling field, partnering as a mentor, consultant, and trainer for those new to the field. Who Am I? I am Dr. Felicia Moses, Ph.D. MA, LLPC. It is nice to meet you!
