Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Gentry.
Hi Larry, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from Full Sail University in 2014 for Digital Cinematography. After graduation I began to create short films and create music videos. I took the challenge and signed up for the 48 Hour Film Project. I competed in the competition for multiple years as a filmmaker before becoming the Producer. The position for City Producer became available in 2024 and I applied and was selected as the City Producer for Detroit. Since 2024, I have been working with local filmmakers helping their vision come to life on the big screen.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. The first year I started, I only knew the filmmakers that I competed against. I had to get out in the community and build relationships to make the events happen. This was mainly a challenge due to me starting as Producer late into the season. I had to hit the ground running while learning the business. I had to partner with local businesses and movie theaters to build the project. I gained the trust of the local filmmakers and also the City of Detroit and rapidly started to grow. I can remember competing myself and all the things I didn’t like, I fixed them for others. It was a rocky road until people started to recognize my passion and dedication to make the project successful.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for being the Producer of the 48 Hour Film Project Detroit. I handle the marketing, recruiting, event planning and editing of the final projects. I am the face of the company for Detroit. I am most proud that I was able to maintain the 48 Hour Film Project in Detroit following a consistent drop-off from the pandemic. What sets me apart from others is my dedication and passion toward success for myself and others. Every film that enters the competition, I ensure it will look and sound it’s very best. I bring great balance to my shows and make every film look and sound great for the audience. I take the time myself to curate the show and edit every single film. Most Producers hire other people to carry the workload for their 48 Hour Film Project. I see it all through myself.
