Today we’d like to introduce you to Martinese Gregory.
Martinese, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story began long before I ever stepped into a recording studio.
When I was three years old, my parents discovered that I could really sing. Once they realized I had this gift, they encouraged me to perform anywhere I could. During one of my very first performances, I was approached by playwright Tiffany Boyer, who asked if I could act. She was writing a play with T.J. Hemphill, who produced the production and is famously known for Perilous Times. She invited me to audition for Hidden Love, and I ended up landing the role of Madison. That opportunity introduced me to another passion acting and my love for singing grew into a love for performing as a whole.
While many kids spent their afternoons in extracurricular activities, I was heading to rehearsals. Most of the time, I was the only child in the cast, surrounded by adults who treated performing like a profession because it was. Acting became my first paid job, and I was experiencing what it was like to work at a very young age but I truly loved it. Looking back, I didn’t have what many people would consider a typical elementary school experience. While other kids were discovering hobbies and participating in after-school activities, I was memorizing scripts, performing on stage, and building experience in the entertainment industry. I went on to perform in several productions throughout the Detroit area during that time in my life.
As I started gaining traction at such a young age, my parents made a very intentional decision. They had always been incredibly supportive of my dreams, but they also understood the realities of pursuing a career in entertainment, especially as a child. They knew that this industry requires a lot of sacrifice—you give up privacy, a sense of normalcy, and many experiences that other kids get to have. They wanted to make sure that if I chose this path, it was because it was truly something I wanted and not just because I had talent or opportunities coming my way.
Because of that, I explored other interests and experience different parts of childhood. During that time, I became involved in activities like softball, basketball, golf, dance, and cheerleading. I’m grateful they allowed me the opportunity to discover who I was outside of performing because it helped me grow and eventually find my way back to music because it was truly where my heart belonged.
Academics also became a major part of my journey. I’ve always been book smart. Through an early college program, I earned my associate degree while I was still in high school. I then attended Michigan State University, where I graduated at just 20 years old with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Youth and Society.
At the time, I was on a completely different path. My goal was to attend law school and become an attorney. Even though I was accomplishing goals that many people admired, I couldn’t ignore the feeling that something was missing.
Music had always been my first love.
While I was in college, I found myself writing songs in my car and sharing them with my friends and roommate. They constantly encouraged me to pursue music because they believed in my talent. The more I created, the more I realized that music wasn’t just something I enjoyed, it was a part of who I was.
After graduating from Michigan State, I had a conversation with my dad that changed everything. He encouraged me to follow my dreams and reminded me that I owed it to myself to see what I could accomplish. With his support, I moved back home at 21 years old and made the decision to seriously pursue music.
Since then, I have been committed to building my career and creating a name for myself. I’ve had the opportunity to headline two sold-out shows at Candela Detroit, build a community of supporters, grow my audience across streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, connect with incredible people in the entertainment industry, and expand my reach beyond Michigan, including opportunities in New York.
The music I create today comes from my own experiences. A major part of my artistry was shaped by a painful breakup that I experienced during college and continued to navigate afterward. That heartbreak became the foundation for some of my most honest songwriting. Instead of allowing that pain to define me, I turned it into purpose.
My goal as an artist is to create music that makes people feel seen, understood, and less alone. I want women especially to hear my music and remember their worth, rebuild their confidence, and know that healing is possible.
My journey has been about staying true to myself and trusting the path that was always meant for me. From the little girl whose parents discovered she could sing at three years old, to the young performer on stage, to the college graduate who once planned to become an attorney, and now the artist chasing her dreams — every chapter has shaped who I am today.
I believe that sometimes your purpose finds you more than once. Even when life takes you in another direction, the things that are truly meant for you have a way of finding you again.
For me, that has always been music
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced throughout this journey has been navigating early adulthood while pursuing a dream like this. Just because you have a dream doesn’t mean your responsibilities stop. You still have bills, relationships, and everyday life to balance while also investing your time, energy, and money into something you believe in.
I think one of the hardest parts has been having faith in something that hasn’t fully happened yet. There are moments where you’re sacrificing so much and you have to trust that the work you’re putting in will pay off. That hasn’t always been easy, but it has strengthened my relationship with God in a way I’ve never experienced before. My faith has become one of my biggest sources of strength.
Another challenge has been navigating relationships while building this career. My life looks different because my priorities are different. I’ve had to become more intentional about the people I keep around me and make sure they truly support my growth and the vision I have for my life.
There have also been times where I’ve had to miss family events, gatherings, or moments with people I love because I had studio sessions, performances, or deadlines I had to meet. Those choices are never easy, but I understand that building the future I dream of requires sacrifice. This journey has taught me that pursuing a dream is about so much more than talent it takes discipline, faith, patience, and the willingness to keep going even when it’s hard.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a singer, songwriter, and actress. I specialize in storytelling through music and performance, creating experiences that allow people to connect emotionally. I’m known for my artistry, my performances, and my journey as an artist. One of my proudest moments was being able to successfully throw my own show in my hometown. It was so much more than just putting on a performance. It taught me leadership, discipline, and everything that goes into bringing a vision to life. I’m also incredibly proud of my courage to chase my dreams and put myself out there because I know so many people have dreams and goals they’re afraid to pursue.
What sets me apart from others, other than my bright red hair, lol, is the space I create for people through my music and my artistry. I want people, especially women, to feel seen, understood, and reminded that they’re not alone. Life can sometimes empty your cup through heartbreak, challenges, and difficult seasons, and my goal is to pour back into people’s cups through my music to encourage them, help rebuild their confidence, and remind them of who they are. I want my supporters to feel like they’re becoming a part of my world and a community where they feel inspired to embrace themselves and chase their own dreams.
What were you like growing up?
Personality-wise, I’ve always had a really big personality. Even as a kid, my personality was larger than life. My parents actually bought a camera just to record me for that exact reason lol. You can only imagined the kinds of videos I have in the vault. But every now and then, I love to go back and watch them even though they can make me cringe a lil lol. But I was never afraid to be myself. I would sing anywhere, anytime, and in front of anyone. I had this confidence and fearlessness before I even knew what insecurities were, and I think that’s something I’ve always admired about my younger self.
I’ve always been someone who loves to laugh. I still do! I love being around funny people. I love having good conversations with all types of people and overall being around people who bring positive energy. I’m a very down-to-earth person, and I think people who know me would describe me as someone who is fun, genuine, and easy to be around.
Outside of music, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I’m the only girl in my family. I have three brothers, no sisters so I think people would be shocked to know I’m into a lot of “boyish” things because I’m so girly lol I’ve spent a lot of time supporting my 2 younger siblings who are college basketball players. Because of them, I developed my own love for watching basketball. I even watch the sports/debate shows especially during playoffs. I also love trying new things and exploring different interests outside of music. Recently, I’ve been enjoying things like painting, nature walks, and pottery—just taking time to discover new hobbies and experiences.
