Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaley Clements.
Hi Kaley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Makeup has been my creative outlet for as long as I can remember. I remember watching makeup tutorials until 4 am. Having navigated complex challenges in my youth, I have developed a strong sense of empathy and perseverance. I was in college for nursing when the pandemic happened. Everything moved to virtual learning and I just cannot learn without being hands on. I think other estheticians would agree. I took a year off from school and the following year, I went to Douglas J in Ann Arbor to get my Esthetics License. During my time at Douglas J., my grandma passed away. She helped raise me and she provided a safe space for me to be myself. I was distraught but I could not let this show on the outside. So naturally I went back to finish my Bachelor’s Degree in Community Health Education. Education was very important to my grandma and I think I’ve always felt guilty that she couldn’t see me finish school. She always told me I could do anything I set my mind to. I was stuck between my degree and my license. Which path do I take? My best friend’s sister asked me to assist her with makeup for a wedding. Since that day, Esthi Kaley came to be. Today, I have finally found a way to blend both my degree and license together through community skincare and wellness education.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like other Estheticians and business owners, it takes time to build clientele. I would say it took me 3 years to feel content with my client base.
I have felt a lot of imposter syndrome too. This year has been about affirming myself and my business.
I have had clients not love my work and wipe it off. That’s okay. I have told people, I am just not the makeup artist for you.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in face; makeup, brow and facial waxing, lash lifts, brow laminations and facials.
I am very community focused as well. I am most proud of piloting a beauty & hygiene pop-up pantry. It is called the Beautifully Well-Hygiene Pantry. My first pop-up is this July.
I advocate and educate about inclusiveness in the beauty space, specifically for the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities and people of all backgrounds.
I provide a calm, skin-focused and educating experience for clients. If you get me talking about ingredients or aftercare, that I can get into.
How do you think about happiness?
My bubble makes me happy. Everyone and everything close to me. First and foremost, my husband and my daughter. My family and friends. I always have a creative project I’m working on. Self-care. Protecting my peace.
