Conversations with Katie Asher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Asher.

Hi Katie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been a collector for as long as I can remember, and I believe I got the bug from my grandparents. They were storage unit buyers, who would collect vintage and antiques. When we moved them out of their house, we found a bear skin coat, among many other cool and wild things in their attic. I started selling vintage clothing as a hobby and side hustle in 2018, and turn it into a full time gig shortly after. I opened the shop in April of 2021, and we have celebrated our sixth summer in business this year. I feel super lucky and grateful to have this space and the community around it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Small business entrepreneurship is definitely not for the faint of heart. I have continuously been learning and growing, and there are many pieces of the business that I am not as good at as others. I try to roll with all of it, and keep trying to learn how to grow and change within my business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am so proud of the community I have built within this space. For a few years, we hosted tons of workshops and classes, which brought a lot of people together within an artistic framework. We also have hosted a sustainable fashion show the past three years, featuring local resellers, vintage dealers, and fashion designers. It has become such a huge part of our community, and I feel so proud of where it started and where it continues to go.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think secondhand and vintage are just going to continue to be a trend. I think we are caring more and more about sustainability, and becoming more and more educated about the evils of the fast fashion industry. I think there’s something for everyone in the secondhand world, and I hope it continues to grow.
