Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Prekup.
Hi Daniel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Daniel Prekup, and I am a musician based in Holly, Michigan. My musical journey began in the early 90s during my time at Holly High School, where I graduated in 1994. It was then that I discovered bands like Metallica and Alice in Chains, sparking a lifelong passion for guitar-driven music.
Growing up, I attempted to learn the guitar several times, but a combination of busy schedules and a lack of discipline left the instrument gathering dust in the corner. Even during college, I struggled to move past a novice level, lacking the maturity to stick with the practice. Over time, I turned to karaoke as a way to explore musical performance. It wasn’t until I took an overseas assignment in Munich, Germany, that I finally developed the discipline and patience required to learn the guitar and master the skill of playing and singing simultaneously. Since returning home, I have translated those lessons into performing at local open mics, where I continue to develop my craft and share my music with the community.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path to where I am today hasn’t been entirely smooth. My primary obstacles included managing my time effectively to ensure consistent practice, overcoming stage fright, and securing access to high-quality equipment and instruments. Additionally, finding like-minded individuals to collaborate with proved difficult. As an extrovert, I thrive on social connection; I find it much easier to stay motivated when an activity is shared, which made practicing alone or in isolated environments a significant challenge.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a musician at the beginning of my professional journey, currently focused on building a diverse cover repertoire that allows me to curate unique, audience-tailored experiences based on the vibe, age range, and energy of every room I play. Over the past year, I have leaned into my creative side by transitioning into songwriting. I am currently in the recording process with the support of my bandmates and the team at Herbert Street Productions, with the goal of releasing a three-song EP this fall. Releasing original music has been a lifelong dream of mine, and I am incredibly proud to finally be bringing these projects to life.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up as a Gen-Xer, I enjoyed a level of independence that feels rare today; I was a “feral kid” who spent my days roaming free, only expected to return home when the streetlights came on. In high school, while I wasn’t part of any single crowd, I took pride in being the bridge between cliques and getting along with everyone. I balanced my social life with sports and a strong commitment to academics, pushed by supportive parents to excel. This focus led me to graduate in the top ten of my class and pursue a Chemistry degree at Baldwin-Wallace University.
Throughout my college years, I refused to let go of my passion for music. As fate would have it, my assigned roommate was the musical director for the university’s radio station, WBWC FM. We bonded quickly over our shared tastes, and he became a great mentor to me, helping me land a DJ spot where I hosted my own show focusing on hard rock and heavy metal. It was during that period that I made many connections that would shape my future and involvement in the music scene in both the Cleveland area, and Detroit.
