Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Sova.
Hi Mason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up surrounded by art, music, and entertainment, my father made music in his spare time and would often perform at concerts like flow fest alongside other musicians and artists. This planted a seed of curiosity in me that would only grow as I got older. My dad would often pull me on stage with him to be his little hype man and even on one occasion had me and my younger brother record vocals for an intro on one of his song. Many years later when I was in high school I discovered my love for writing music and over the years developed it into a passion. Around the time of the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic I had saved up enough money to buy all the equipment for a small studio that I set up in my childhood bedroom and spent the majority of the lockdown teaching myself FL-studios and becoming a full time student of “YouTube-University” in order to improve my skills as an artist. Since then I’ve released 2 albums, a large number of singles, and curated a host of other artists from all around Michigan who I often get the pleasure of sharing a stage with.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road by any means. There is a lot of pressure that you put on yourself when you go out of your way to do something like music. Especially when you don’t have many connections. That pressure has gotten the best of me many times and can still be difficult to overcome. I can’t count the number of sleeping nights I’ve spent attempting to perfect a small section of a song only to listen back later and be utterly ashamed of the result and wasted time. And you have to wear so many different hats as an artist that it’s easy to get caught up in the details of a project when you don’t have a clue how to start, but that pressure and the time spent learning new skills and techniques is essential to becoming a successful and well rounded artist.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’d say that I’m most well known for my music, but I am a creative in all aspects, so I don’t want to just make the songs post them and call it a day. I wanna make an original oil painting for the album cover, had place ever element of the graphic design myself, design cool stickers and art that aligns with the aesthetic of the album and put it all into one big experience, but it’s extraordinary difficult to do everything right on your own without a real budget or a team while still working 40+ hours a week to keep the lights on and the fridge full. Selling art ain’t cheap.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
With enough time, patience, and love for the craft, you can do anything, you can go places you never thought you’d be, and create art you thought was only a pipe dream. You just have to give yourself the space to make it happen and be willing to put in the work.
