Conversations with Depeila Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Depeila Hill.

Hi Depeila, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I come from a musical background. My father, Paul Hill is part of the legendary Funk group Parliament and the Funkadelic. They just celebrated 50 years at the Essence music fest! Being around such freedom of expression, staying up late in the studio, going on tour and watching my Dad create gave me the bug. I’ve been hooked ever since! I believe singing is my destiny. Throughout grade school I’d sing here and there; my cotillion ball, talent shows, etc. It wasn’t until graduating Western Michigan University back in 2016 when I decided to take music seriously. After graduation, I got a job working at the Motown Museum as a tour guide. Being in that musical universe was a wonderful experience. I liken it to attending Grad school. Motown provided me with many opportunities to perform and build relationships. I never knew who was going to walk through the door: Otis Williams of the Temptations, Martha Reeves of the Vandellas, Janelle Monae, Corinne Bailey Rae, Berry Gordy you name it! That environment was highly inspirational and gave me the push I needed to start making music. Where I am today is a reflection of these experiences. The last 10 years have been a grind but I’m grateful to be here.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path of an artist is never smooth sailing. There will many always be ebbs and flows. My deep reverence for Black Soul music keeps me going. I feel very blessed to be able to create this music. I’ve faced a ton of rejection; like when I auditioned for the Apollo twice and didn’t make it, doors being shut in my face, opportunities falling through, you name it! I never stopped because I understand there is no such thing as overnight success. All those no’s helped me to hone my craft and grow as an artist.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In January I released my debut single “Can’t count you out” I’m so proud of this song. It’s like my baby. I poured a lot of heart and soul into it. It’s available on all streaming platforms, so if you are into R&B & Soul or just good music in general you should check it out! Recently I was able to perform it at the Hot 107.5 WGPR artist showcase. It’s been fun collaborating with my Dad and local legends and creatives to bring it to life. There have been so many changes in Detroit. I mean we just elected our first Black woman mayor in Mary Sheffield. My goal as an artist is to always embody the spirt and soul of Detroit.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
God has blessed me with a strong support system. Cheerleaders who have helped make my dreams reality. Bryanna Jeavonni of Kreative Kanvas who did the video for “Cant count you out”. Mfwarhouse who did the styling. Rachel and the entire team at the Peacock Room who have been incredible. Last but certainly not least my loving friends and family. Any creative endeavor requires collaboration. I can honestly say none of this would be possible without their encouragement and support.
