Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Richard.
Hi Jonathan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The journey that brought me to this point begins with a lot of emotional and physical trauma and being involved with the medical system for many years without getting the desired relief. After obtaining my masters degree in clinical social work and working for the state for many years, I branched off on my own in order to be able to utilize a combination of approaches that truly helps people and is outside of the colonized mental health approach often found in America. What I offer helps people connect to the medicine which is inside of them that they have become disconnected from as a result of cultural and religious programming as well as accumulated hurts.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I was a first generation college student so it was a completely foreign world to me. Additionally, I was experiencing poverty throughout the entire process, so I was working several jobs to make ends meet along with being physically immobilized at times due to a medical condition. Upon getting my masters degree, I felt in my heart that the approaches being used where I was working were not actually helping people to the depths they needed and deserved. Speaking out in a way that challenges status quo makes you a target. We live in a culture which is self policing where people have been programmed to do their best to get other people back in line when they step out, so there has been a lot of pushback regarding my approach. However, it has all absolutely been worthwhile and I would do it all over again if given the opportunity.
As you know, we’re big fans of Take Root Wellness LLC.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Take Root Wellness was created from the belief that healing happens when we care for the whole person, not just symptoms. While insight is valuable, many people find themselves understanding why they struggle without experiencing the lasting change they’re hoping for. My work is designed to bridge that gap by integrating traditional psychotherapy with mindfulness, nervous system regulation, trauma-informed yoga, and holistic approaches that honor the connection between the mind, body, and spirit.
I specialize in working with adults navigating complex trauma, religious trauma, ADHD, chronic pain, anxiety, and the effects of spending a lifetime adapting to survive. Many of my clients are highly sensitive, neurodivergent, spiritually curious, or members of the 2S-LGBTQIA+ community. They are often thoughtful, insightful people who have already invested a great deal in their healing but still feel disconnected from themselves or stuck in familiar patterns.
What sets my practice apart is the combination of clinical expertise and a deeply holistic perspective. My background as a Licensed Master Social Worker is complemented by training in trauma-informed yoga, mindfulness, and mind-body approaches. Rather than focusing solely on symptom reduction, I help clients better understand themselves, regulate their nervous systems, reconnect with their authentic identities, and create meaningful, lasting change.
More than anything, I hope people know that they don’t have to continue living in survival mode. Healing doesn’t require becoming someone different, it begins by reconnecting with who you’ve always been beneath the layers of trauma, self-doubt, and adaptation. It is a privilege to walk alongside people as they rediscover that version of themselves.
What’s next?
Eventually I plan on purchasing a retreat center to offer people affordable experiences that shift their perspectives. I’m also in the process of adding wilderness therapy and trauma intensives.
